Exhaust Leaks?

Now normally I am a pretty observant guy so that is why I don't think I am making this up. My FJ is almost three months old and I think I already have an exhaust leak. I think I hear a little pattering under the car. Are these cars prone to exhaust leaks? Now I don't even know if I have a leak since I am not an expert. I am just going on my observations and I could be wrong. I just heard this noise a couple of days ago to my knowledge.

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

do you hear a 'tick, tick, tick' sound? do you feel like there's loss of power?

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

I can't tell if there is a loss in power, but I do think I hear a sleight tick, tick. This is kind of hard to diagnose over the internet. I was just wondering if this was something like body rips, paint chips, windshield cracks, and other things that happen to almost all FJs. I will take it to a professional.

Thanks,

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

Mine was tight... it worked great with my exhaust air jack, which won't work if you have a small leak. I don't know if my aFe hi tuck is tight enough to do that anymore. I'll check it out some day. If it doesn't work, I can always use my CO2 tank.

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

Turn the engine one, get under the truck, and put your near the flange that connects the manifold to the midpipe, then repeat for other side. if you feel exhaust pumping out then you have a leak.

Also, hold your breathe while underneath the rig just in case.

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

start it, put the e-brake on, climb underneath it and investigate.

I would have to say that it unlikely that you have an exhaust leak. I have never heard anything about that being an issue. What I would look/listen for is a loose bolt on a skid plate or a loose exhaust pipe hanger.
I used to have an issue like that twice in my old Cherrokee and it sounded gnarly! The exhaust hanger was the first issue and the second time it was a loose bolt on one of my skid plates. both were very cheap repairs
Good luck and may the FJ Force Be With You

Re: Exhaust Leaks?

This is the first I've heard of a possible exhaust problem.... The engine does have a natural ticking noise though that is perfectly normal
