Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

Hey there. I don't mean to start with a somewhat negative post but I have to. My wife and I have been looking into a nice 4x4 that could also work well day to day and with a kiddo in the back.

We both love the FJ. We have looked at several options and the FJ exceeds in nearly every category. We love the design, the fun, the fit and finish, the usability, the easy cleaning, the onroad drive and the offroad ability.

So I've been recently checking over about every detail I could before a purchase and I came across all of the fender ripping and bulging reports. Ouch.

Again, I don't mean to be negative, but just clear that without a statement and/or official solution from Toyota, I won't be buying. Bummer because I otherwise really like this vehicle.

Re: Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

not really an issue other than the visual factor. Not sure what "Toyota" will do if anything, but I was told it was my fault and I am on my own to fix it. So don't count on a fix just yet, again not really an issue otherwize.

Don't let this keep you from buying an FJ if that's what you want. The problem is NOT cropping up on the late FJ's only the early ones.

Re: Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

Body rips are serious for those who have them. For the other 99,800 it is not an issue (unless it represents a total drop in the quality of Toyota - I don't think so). Toyota is owning up to it anyways. Buy away.

I'd take a body issue over an engine or tranny issue. With this in mind you decision is easy over Hummer, Jeep, etc.

Re: Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

Honestly, it's not the right truck for a day-to-day with a kiddo in the back. Or at least, you won't know if it is until you've tried it for a week... and then I bet you'll think it isn't.

I'd get something with easier access to the rear seat in a parking lot.

Definitely go see it's equal, "The JEEP Liberty" and drive it. Very Roomy & more family friendly. I wouldn't want to put my child in a vehicle that Rips apart & has structural integrity issue's. You get way more with the Liberty. and if you want to go to the Rubicon & have a ball. There, see how easy.

Re: Body rips VERY discouraging for potential buyer

psssssssssssssssssssssst......
I drive mine like a maniac , I hit pot holes and jump curbs doing 80 mph and I take it off road (beaches and trails)and I dont have any bulges or rips.....
Im not positive , but I think the owners that have these issues (body rips etc) are extreme hardcore offroaders with modifications... like 6" lifts .....Knobby offroad tires and 500 lb aftermarket steel bumpers and 100 lb winches hanging off the front end.
Some of these guys jump dunes.... getting 10 feet off the ground and land right on the nose of the FJ (youtube videos galore).
anyway....

If you're a regular average person , and dont treat your FJ like Tony Hawk treats his skateboard......Its a Fantastic Rig.

(but not great to put kids in the back)
