FJing to Argentina

So I have a wild hair up my ass and contemplating driving my FJC to S. America/Argentina sometime early next year and documenting my travels. I thought I'd start this thread in preparation of this journey, perhaps find a travel companion, and maybe even a caravan partner... sponsership? LOL!

I'm flying to S. America / mostly Argentina at the end of Nov. for a month to check things out. Anyways, I'll keep this thread updated as my thinking progresses.

Re: FJing to Argentina

Definetly possible, when I was in Peru I've met a guy who drove a Pinzgauer from Colorado, and was heading to Chile. His biggest advantage in driving that versus drivng an FJ was that it was diesel which widely available everywhere, whereas 91-octane unleaded may not always be as available.

Another thing is... the FJ is a rather new vehicle and not seen in South America. New, can mean rich and you maybe a bigger target for thieves.

I'd consider a 60 or 80 Land Cruiser. Also, if you need to dump it along the way it's less money lost. (prepare for the worst)

Pics of the said Pinz...

Wow that thing is sweet!

Sounds like a fun trip, you should totally do it. I'm sure you could find some kind of sponsorship!

Re: FJing to Argentina

My wife and I are talking about driving from Calif to Costa Rica. There’s a book about doing it in 8 days. (Out of print used for 198 dollars) I’ve talked with two people who have driven as far as CR and the worst part was Southern Mexico. Keep us informed.

Re: FJing to Argentina

i think you would be risking alot driving a new model vehicle in central and south america. you dont want to get yourself kidnapped or jacked.

Re: FJing to Argentina

That would be awesome. And would like to do something like this someday, too. I've been in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. You might want to check with Customs and Inmigration requirements of ea. country and take lots of money (meaning availability) cause they may ask you for big bucks when entering their countries as a guarantee that you're heading back out with your vehicle.
You should be fine w/ the new FJ, because there are new cars there too, just check your sorroundings and over your shoulders constantly.
Oh, driving over there can be chaotic, too.
