Holy crap, 1/4 tolerance???? In our primary business we do high tolerance tooling for different lamination industries and trust me, 1/4 tolerance is like the equivalent of the distance from here to the Moon compared to the tolerances we run.
I imagine it's like the other poster said, they're using thinner material to cut costs. But that's pretty shady, especially to not even machine both surfaces and remove the extruder marks. The machining in general looks good, but those are some pretty shady practices in my opinion.
Sorry you had to go through all this trouble Tony. It is sad when company can't even listen to what you want but rather try to cut corners as much as possible and give you something that "should work". I had a similar experience with a local rear end company. The owner new his stuff but his kid was dummer then a brick and couldn't even make me U-bolts the right length after the 3rd set I just took them and did it on my own.

From what I've gathered from other posters in other forums, the markings on the plate shows that it wasn't machined. The back side of the rings look like the front side, which means they started with 1/2 in thick plates and was trying to pass that on as 5/8th.

Yup that's run and size stamp on raw alum.
You can clean that up easy. WD40 on a 00 steel wool. It WONT scratch, you will get a polished look and will burnish it slightly (won't turn white and oxidize to fast)
TRUST me on this, I have over 4000' of truss we do this to every summer..

Thanks! 00 steel wool? Will kitchen scrounge pad work?

The vendor posted a response on ih8mud. I'll quote it here.

Tony,
I am sorry you are still not happy with your purchase. As I have offered to you both over the phone and via email you have are more than welcome to return the wheels as outlined in our return policy found on our web site. We do not want unhappy customers and have gone to great lengths to make things right with you. If the wheels are in fact useless to you and you have them (in new condition/not mounted) please box them up and let us get you a refund. I know it must have been frustrating for you when the Discover card people determined that we had offered you a reasonable solution and decided not to refund your money AND let you keep the wheels but I feel you are now being unfair to us.
Yes there was a misunderstanding on the ring thickness in the beginning based on the lower price you negotiated. The ring thickness was then made right and the original BS Series ring was exchanged for the Rock Lock ring for the price difference. You ordered the ring in a natural finish. Therefore the aluminum is left in it's natural state. The stamp on it verifies the grade of aluminum used. It is not a stain and I have told you how to remove it. If you had ordered polished, anodized or powder coat finish the ring surface would have received attention. You elected to not have a finish done. I am sorry you were not happy with your decision.
Please contact me soon to arrange the return.
Tammy

just clean steel wool, spray wool and spray surface, light swirl motion you'll be ok!
Or some 3M maroon scotchbrite, and WD 40 like Savvyav says.
This machine shop is clearly a joke... and likes to cut corners.
Generally the reason aluminum parts are so expensive is because the aluminum is expensive. All the clamps I make (save for the Odyssey which is just a behemoth clamp) start off about 9 inches long, 2 inches wide, and 1 inch thick.
5.4mm comes off the 1" dimension, which is 25.4mm in metric, for a finished height of 20mm. That is a decent amount of aluminum when you consider that is over 18 square inches. But it is a necessary waste as I need something to hold onto in the vice.
These guys should be using atleast 3/4" stock if they want to make 5/8" parts. Leaving the cosmetic face with the... looks like rolled plate scale... and stampings on it is ridiculous! Sorry to hear about this Tony...
I also wanted to add that aircraft aluminum is a really useless statement. The high grade stuff is 7000 series, mostly 7075 or 7050. I machine this expensive stuff all day long making aerospace parts. However, because some of the less structual parts use 6061 (your average good billet material), people like to call this aircfrat grade as a selling point. It is good stuff, but come on...
