Search Function and Thread Titles, Need To Include Key Terms Or Else...

OK,

I have a basic gripe about the search function here at the forum. I just spent 15 minutes looking up a thread that I casually mentioned in a post because the search function is only as good as the information supplied in the title and to a lesser degree the posts associated with it.

Now, I'm not pissed that I did the search...I love to help people. What made it close to impossible is that the Title did not have any key words in it that made it stand out. Now, I know that people like to be cute in their choice of titles but you are doing everyone a great disservice by not providing some key terminology to expedite the search function.

Everyone loves to flame newbys about not doing a search...and thus we end up with a million new threads that ask/cover the same topics that bounce up everytime someone joins the forum or can't find it with the search function.

Unless people try to make the title somewhat coherant and include key phrases, then we will all continue to have to endure the same subject labeled as many ways as there are words in the english language.

So, if your topic is about third row seating and the company is named Little Passenger Seats, Inc., then you NEED to title your post:

"3rd. Row Seating: Little Passenger Seats, Inc." or some variation of that title.

Otherwise, 1-2 years from now when the Forum has 135,629 different threads about blind spots and 2,369,900 threads about tires, NO ONE will be able to find anything about anything without devoting a day to finding it.

This is my advice to ALL!!!

Good point Jimmy
but that is to speed up the search
guess, so that searches do not last all day, we need to put up with it

Highbeams,

I agree with putting up with it and as stated before am happy going out of my way to help someone. This critique of the search/thread process only needs to apply to major/new information or categories. Obviously, threads that are humor oriented or about your new rig coming in do not need to be as specific. But if everyone were to be more consious about labeling threads that provide good info for all, then extra care needs to be placed on the title.

You know what I've found helpful? There's an option to search "posts" instead of "threads". That option will take you to individual posts with the specific search terms you enter. That negates the need to wade through indecipherable thread titles. Try it, you'll like it.

I do too.

I also find it helpful to stick an "*" (ie, wildcard) at the end of the keywords when it comes up with nuttin'.

John & Jlam,

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try in the near future.

Thanks for the suggestions. I spent a fair amount of time last night trying to find how to install pics that are larger than thumbnails and never did find it using the search. Knew I would get flamed if I outright asked.

Re: Search Function and Thread Titles, Need To Include Key Terms Or Else...

On that note, I want to also file a complaint. I hate it when people announce that they got a lift or some new mod and leave everyone hanging. If you're gonna go through the trouble of posting, put pics up and detailed info. More than likely others will be interested in other options, what you paid, was the install difficult, etc. If you don't know how to post pics, then use the search fxn.....oh wait, you're sh!t outta luck here. JK search anyway or just ask.
