I love my FJ, I have had it over a year and it still makes my day every time I drive it, just wish it was built a little tougher. Yesterday I sadly backed into a saturn. I was barely moving and it destroyed my FJ's left corner piece on the rear bumper. It barely scratched the frickin saturn. Personally I think that an off road vehicle like the FJ should have a bumper that can withstand a trail let alone a plastic saturn. If I had the cash I would buy Warn bumpers, but college budget is not going to allow that any time soon....
They are pitiful.. One of those foam bats that kids play with can do $500 damage to a FJ bumper.. Ron

One has to realize, those silver wings are just a cosmetic so is the black plactic wraps around both front and rear. real bumper is behind them on both ends. Remember your tow hitch gets attached to that rear bumper which is also the eight frame member. If they were to put metal bumpers outside (which I wish they did) it would probably effect the gas mileage. It is a heavy vehicle to begin with so they try to use plastic where ever they can to minimize the weight and it is easier to shape than metal. Thats my 2.
It's the black plastic bumper "cover that costs so much and is so flimsy. It sure absorbs the hit and self destructs in the process. The tinny bumpers on a Jeep TJ weight next to nothing, but are really strong. Ron

There are pros and cons... Our stock bumpers can't take much abuse - but they don't do much damage either. Oh sure, it's fun to think of how strong the aftermarket bumpers are... how they'll destroy anything that hits them... Right until you actually destroy another bumper. I did this (in a Grand Wagoneer with custom steel bumpers). I backed into a new Grand Wagoneer. I barely nudged it. It cost me $800 to repair the GC's plastic bumper. Had I been in a stock FJ, there wouldn've been (likely) no damage to either. Pros and cons..
