Need Help on Jack Stands

I have two two ton jack stands. I am gonna put one on each side of the frame and do work. Most people on the threads recommend three ton. WIll this work? The fj wieghs 4400 lbs. So mathematically i am well covered. Two jaack stands should support 8000 lbs or more. Let the help begin. Thanks in advance. Oh yeah, the two jacks will be used only in the front. the rear will still be on the ground.

You will be fine safety-wise. One advantage to higher-rated jack stands is that they are taller. The stock FJC is farther off the ground than most cars and after you lift it obviously it is more so.

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

AS you have noted you have two, four thousand pound jack stands. People normally get as much jack and jack stand as they can, if they plan on working under there.

The issue is what are you going to be doing? If the wheels and tires are staying on and you're careful, everything should be fine. Personally I don't like to actually be under a vehicle with the wheels and tires removed. Too many people get crushed that way. Normally I'll hear of at least one person per year getting crushed. Some survive, some don't.

If I planned on being under there without the wheels and tires, I'd use the ones I have and buy another set and use those as well! Jack stands are cheap, funeral's aren't. Ron

X2, WHen it comes to jack stands I have always thought more is better as well. They are cheap so buying a second set is never a big deal

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

Plus they last forever, if you get the real ones. I don't like those little steel "light weight" ones with the pins. Get the real "heavy" ones with the rack/lock. My current set of four 3-ton standa are 11 years old. Ron

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

Right on thanks guys. The wheels will remain on and another set sounds like the best approach. Thanks guys for quick feedback.

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

That's the ticket.. If the wheels are on, just stay out from under them and don't put any body parts in-between anything else.. Ron

PS: Stacking a few 2X6's under the wheels doesn't hurt either!

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

I know I might get flammed for this but Harbor Freight has a pair of 6 ton stands that are nice and tall for like $19 or something close to that. I used to have a Ford Expedition and those things worked great and that thing weight 5800lbs. The problem I have now is that my aluminum jack is not really tall enough and I have to use a block in order to get the stands under the FJC.

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

You'll be fine with the 2-ton jackstands as long as they're tall enough. Don't forget to chock the wheels.

Re: Need Help on Jack Stands

They should be fine. You'll normally see the same jack stand's at many different places, just a different label.

That's the problem with a lit of jacks. I like to have at least a 19"-21" jack. The bigger/heavier truck jacks will go even higher, but they are not very portable. Ron
