New Top Speed!

I set a new speed record this week! I have my Garmin Nuvi 760 installed over my rear view mirror and it has the ability to track your top speed. I had to fly to Cleveland this week so I decided to pop the Nuvi in my briefcase and take it with me. While in the air I decided to pull it out and see what it would do from the air. I now have a new top speed of 539 mph recorded in my system. Next time someone gets in my Fj I might have to prove how fast it can go!

Re: New Top Speed!

Man, I like that Nuvi 760 (thin and larger display than my Garmin 2620). I think the GPS market is heading toward where the digital camera market was three years ago; ripe for explosion with newer and cheaper models. Once they become more of a commodity item, I'll pick up another one.

BUT, I'll get my brother to take it on reserve duty with him, and beat your flight record! Try, full-military power!

Re: New Top Speed!

The prices on them are dropping already. I think this is widely due to the fact that a lot of phones are coming out with basic GPS on them for cheap. The iPhone has google maps and a sort of GPS unit. Cheaper GPS is a coming

No electronics of that type are allowed to be run in the cabin while in flight. Even radio receivers such as GPS "leak" radio energy out of the antenna. This is due to the way the receivers are built to meet a price point.

Every time you take off they tell you to TURN THEM OFF.

Anyhow, the leaked signals will interfere with aircraft radio communications.

Be smart and leave them off.

I think my 760 was about $530 delivered.

I did not have it on during take off or landing nor did we crash or go screaming out of control when I turned it on. I did however watch Mythbusters and they busted the myth that cell phones interfere with airplane communications.

Re: New Top Speed!

there is so much shielding between items normaly brought onto a plane and whats already on a plane that a handheld gps is like trying to get a m1a1 to wreck by running into it with a schwinn 10-speed.

its just aint gonna happen.

I guess next time I'm with one of my first officers and he pulls out his hand held GPS on the flight deck (damn thing won't let me say kockpit all-one-word (****pit)) I'll have to tell him to put it away. Man I'm sure glad that read this post. We could have been in some rrrreeeeaaallll danger!
