a better way to protect spare from being stollen

I have a lock nut on my FJ alloy spare, part of the 5 lock nut wheel lock set. However, I still think it is possible for someone to steal the spare easily. I park in an outdoor park & ride lot all day while at work. Just got the FJ this weekend, and am thinking of taking off the spare and storing it in rear, though it would take too much cargo space.

Is there a more secure lock I can get for the spare to keep it mounted?

Hmm. Where did you get your 5 lock set? When I bought mine, there were only four. Although now I see that the spare is included on the TRD site.

Re: a better way to protect spare from being stollen

Go to (China World) aka Walmart and puchase a 5' bycycle cable combo lock braided stainless cable works well. Its not easy to cut with bolt cutters.

This combined with the locking lugs may serve as a deterent.

Bottom line is if they really want that spare and your parked in a window of opportunity, its history. Other than that go to a hardware store and buy the type of security chain that has to be cut with a instore hydralic bolt cutter. Get a medco lock and that ought to do it.

That will work well but let's be honest here, you really just want to keep someone from having an easy time of taking your spare. Almost anything you do (like a wheel lock) is plenty. After all, it's not like these wheels or tires are in huge demand. There are plenty other very expensive wheels on cars that are much more logical and likely targets. Get yourself a wheel lock or two or three or this and be happy

Re: a better way to protect spare from being stollen

I've got a wheel lock and a spare tire mount bike rack that locks to the spare tire hub plus a bike cable lock on mine. Not because I'm nervous about the spare but don't want the bike rack stolen. For at least the past ten years I haven't used wheel locks on my 911 and never had a stolen wheel or tire. I've never parked the car with the top on if its a nice day and never lost a radio or anything else. Maybe prople in Houston are honest but then I don't park in Ken Lay or Jeff Skillings neighborhood.

Re: a better way to protect spare from being stollen

How about putting the spare in your garage when you are not off-roading or going far.
