Chains or Straps

Are recovery straps better than recovery chains? I have access to both. I am familiar with chains, but I have only used them on HMMWV's that I was not too concerned about breaking. They didn't have much stretch and jerked the shookie out of me. So unless told otherwise I will be going with chains on my FJ.

and start about #13 reply

also (from reply #17)

[QUOTEJOne of the problems with using chain is they don't give at all and therefore are hard on equipment. Since straps stretch they're more forgiving and won't rip part off a tow hook.

Another thing is a strap can recover you like nothing else can. For example, one time when I went snow wheeling I was buried up to my frame so we hooked up the strap. Now, snow is a funny thing because it will refreeze instantly. Well the guy pulling me hits the gas and gets a little momentum up. I see the back of his truck jerk around a little and then he comes to a complete stop. I feel absolutely nothing because the truck was frozen to the ground. Then about a half second later, because of the stretchiness of the strap, the strap yanks me out.

Here is a good article about recovery:

Re: Chains or Straps

If your going to tie your self to something solid and wratched yourself out ,like a tree with a hi jack lift to crank u out. A chain is a must!!!!
But if your going to have someone pull u out a strap is better. So carry both, but chains are heave and noisy. I only carry them when i know ill need it.

You should not use chains on trees as they damage the tree - Use a tree protector strap. Check out www.treadlightly.org for more ways to off road while protecting the trails for the next guy...

I ment between the tree and your truck, should be a chain. I usually put my tow strap betwen the chain and the tree. you dont want any give when you cranking inch by inch.
I really hate the damm seria club here in california, closing down Offroad areas to prtect damm turtles!!! Sorry your save the tree comment reminded me of them.
