problem with exhaust bolt

I was trying to unbolt the two 14mm bolts on my stock exhaust so I could install the high clearance pipe. One bolt removed easily, but the head on the other bolt started to strip out in the socket. I've applied WD40 liberally, but am not sure I can get it removed. Any ideas?

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

I believe some members have just sawed it off. I will probably find out when I installed a JBA exhaust.

Sawing i don't think will help you as you are not installing a whole new exhaust, but just the high clearance one. I know exactly what two bolts you are talking about. PB lube (find at walmart) is much much better for this application. However, even after soaking mine for hours, they still wouldn't budge and broke a socket.
The drill bit idea would be good, i just think it would be near impossible to get to with out unbolting the whole exhaust system. Mine wouldn't come loose at all when installing new exhaust, so i just hacksawed the rear above the axle and pulled it out. This maybe an option though.

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

Layton, you mean you sawed the old exhaust, or the bolt? Do you reuse these bolts when putting on the JBA? *sigh* I really need to find the time to put mine on...

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

WD-40 is a lubricant, and not penetrating oil.

The absolute best penetrating oil I've ever used over the years is a K&W's Knock-er-Loose. You can probably find it at most auto parts stores. I've seen Knock-er-Loose penetrate what I thought was almost fused rusted parts... great stuff. It just takes time to do its thing...

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

For rounded-off bolt-heads, you might try these:

Irwin sockets for rounded-off bolt heads and nuts?

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

Those special rounded off bolt sockets works well, but you can still heat the bolt good and hot, then let it cool to break it loose, then penetrant, then use the special socket. Or you could heat the area around the bolt (but not the bolt).

Re: problem with exhaust bolt

Make sure your using a quality SIX point socket. Otherthan the penetrating oil (PB Blast) break that sucker off and get you a new one.
