Air Tank Bumper?

Anyone found an air tank bumper for the FJ yet? I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything, forgive me if I didn't dig deep enough...

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

Ranch Hand does that type of bumper but they dont make one for the FJ. I contacted them direct and they said they would not even attempt it.

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

Most air tank bumpers that you see are built by the owner of the rig. Few major manufacturers will be willing to take any risk on those lines as compressed air can be an issue. Many wheelers use this approach and have no problems with it.

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

What do you mean by an "air tank bumper" ? Do you mean a bumper in which a tank for holding compressed air is mounted to it?

It's a bumper that is actually an air tank. At the plant where I work, we have an old truck that has a pretty large air tank bumper, and I thought it would be a good idea for the FJ if it could look cool, too.

Here's an example I found online:

In reading up on these, I've found that many people make their own, and I guess a lot of bumpers can be welded shut and fitted to be an air tank without too much modification.

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

I have had an airtank bumper on a previous Toyota truck that I had. The only problem was that there was not enough air in the tubes to make a difference. I am sure you could make a larger tank but that means a larger bumper and clearance problems. I am fitting a tank under the FJ right now.

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

I know they don't have enough volume on their own, but isn't it possible that by using a small compressor you could supplement it. Then you are only adding a small compressor.

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

It was real popular back in the 70's-80's in the off-road world....I haven't seen to many since then....

Re: Air Tank Bumper?

If you combine say a bumper and a pair of sliders as compressed air cylinders it all adds up. A small compressor can keep up with that rather easy. I'd think a setup like that could cycle an air locker several times beffore the compressor was needed to re fill. One man's opinion
