Re: Diesel!
It gets even more complicated when you look at the research world. Our administrators are telling our researchers (academic) that they should move away from research like cancer, Alzheimer's and viral pathogens to biofuel. The government is subsidizing biofuel research to the detriment of medical research. We're building an entire research campus with pilot plants for biofuel research now; while our medical/pharmaceutical researchers attempt to work with antiquated equipment and budgets. They're also actively recruiting farmers to switch to biofuel fodder. All in addition to subsidizing the oil companies to produce/integrate more biofuel.
The budgets for non war related research have already dropped near 50% since then first Iraq conflict. In some areas it's gone from 21-23% funded to less that 5%.
This is all about money; and not for us consumers either. The oil is out there, the rest is smoke and mirrors..
Rant over... Now having said all that, let me say that I would love to see a diesel option. Would I buy one, no possible way, but those that would.. would. I just don't like them for a daily driver. Ron

Correct. IMO, although biodiesel is more efficient than ethanol, using any food for fuel is stupid. And what is even worse, is subsidizing the production of ethanol with tax dollars. The government pays ethanol producers over $.50 per gallon of ethanol they produce. That is why they are so eager to build plants everywhere. Even Bill Gates is heavily invested in Pacific Ethanol.
This has to stop. This is money that should be going towards rebuilding and updating our aging and faltering infrastructure. Gotta admit, you can thank ol' Bushy for this one.
We should be working out trade deals with the countries we sell food to.
Our desperately needed food for their desperately wanted oil.

How about we all just agree that our government has made a big friggin' ugly mess out of this industry and has been doing a super crappy job of running this country for way too many years ?

Soo, you guys are suggesting that we have a broken energy policy?
Do we even have a policy? I thought the plan was to ram as much money into Big Oil as possible.
Russia has just decomissioned a big reactor, (plenty of nuc material left over, I understand) so maybe put a small reactor in the FJ. You would only have to fuel it once. I guess if you busted the containment shell in an accident, that would be kinda bad-just drive carefully.
I would buy a Diesel too if I were buying a new FJ, but wouldn't trade my current gas burner in for one
i never had a diesel before are they that much better?

Razor J, we are suggesting, or possibly insisting, that we have a broken government. Based on that, one can assume that anything tied to or created by our government is probably broken or wasn't worth a dam in the first place.

I just finished my second research survey from Toyota- I received it in the mail about three days ago, and let me say- a very detailed survey... but of special note, a whole section dedicated to future powerplant options and my preference for each. Hopefully others out there take the time to fill out these surveys to let Toyota know what their consumers want in the future!

The first few surveys I didn't bother with. I started them but when it became obvious it would take an hour to complete they went in the round file. The prizes will help get more of these new shorter surveys turned in.

FYI: my post # 17 is quoted directly from a guy at Toyota. Not someone in accounting, either.
They have plans to bring diesel to the U.S. market. Just not tomorrow. Sit tight and it will happen. There are other alternative fuels they are researching as well.
