It's all moot, though, when you consider the fact that it's optional to pay the fee. So....I guess I'm still wondering why everyone's so up in arms about it.

I agree....get FireFox and the plugin Ad Blocker Plus, and the site screams along just fine. If you don't wanna pay, don't. Ya know, I don't walk into a store and gripe to the cashier about not wanting to pay to get a magazine. If I don't wanna pay for a magazine, I borrow my neighbor's magazine. Sheesh....I know, not really the same thing, but just as ridiculous.
I find the site fun. I find a LOT of the folks here very nice, and very knowledgeable. Therefore I choose to stick around, and the membership is a side benefit. Especially in my case....right Dragon?

I stand at the magazine rack at 7-11 and read them all until I am asked to leave. My co-workers dad is the chief editor of all the gun magazines there are.

Nothing wrong with any of that....but to hint that the owners of this site weren't turning a profit and that this new membership status is anything more than extra "gravy" (again, nothing wrong with gravy)....is malarkey (sp?).

You may indeed be right. There may be a profit being made. Okay. And just to be clear....I don't have a problem with them making a profit in the slightest....but don't try and sell it to everyone that it costs so much to run the site and make it seem as if they might be having a hard time breaking even. They aren't.

Until they become a publicly held corporation on the Dow Jones, though, is it really our business to know HOW much of a profit they're turning? The amount of Advil they go through has to be a large G/L expense.
I'm just sayin'.
