Re: If you are running 285/70/17 on your rig read this post!

Mine have never touched and have been worked off road pretty hard.

Also, as Layonn pointed out, regardless of the pressure, the sidewall bulge is on the lower half of the tire.

Finally, when the suspension compresses, the gap increases, although I guess there is potentially an issue when the suspension is at full droop, but I have never had an issue either way.

I couldn't get 285's to fit my current rims. They were less than a 1/2" from the UCA and when the wheel was turned they rubbed. Discount did a trial fit for me. That's why I am still running 265's. I think it is all about the offset of the rim.

I just got 285s for Mother's Day. I have not noticed any rubbing at all but I only put about 100 miles on them today.

thanks for all the replies.. i wasn't sure if in the future i would have a problem with them.

Congrats on your 285's Kim..

So if you do install spacers on the hubs, does this move the tire closer to the body mount? is seems like it could because without the spacer it is behind the mount more, and moving it out would put the tire in the middle of the mount? correct

Re: If you are running 285/70/17 on your rig read this post!

I noticed the same thing and got to wondering about spacers as well. Then I went and jacked the wheel up all the way and then jacked the FJ up with one of the front tires at full droop. No rub at all either case, and it stays pretty considtent at about 1/2"-3/4" space. I had slight body mount rub at hard crank coming into driveways and such without a lift kit. Since the OME 3" I clear the mounts but think that wheel spacers will push it closer to the body mount. Everyone of the wheel spacer posts I have seen have been people running 1" or 1.25" spacers. You can get 1/4" or 1/2" spacers and maybe not rub on either area.

Mine rubs on the inside of the fenderwell sometimes.

But of course, I have been known to wheel pretty hard sometimes...

Still would not trade them.

Re: If you are running 285/70/17 on your rig read this post!

From what I am reading, I would also think that just a 1/2 inch or so spacer should make you feel better, and still not rub.
I thought that 99% of the 285/70/17 were fine, but I guess I do have 16" so I could be wrong.

Re: If you are running 285/70/17 on your rig read this post!

Maybe I'm missing something...

As an example from the BFG Website

Stock size tire:
LT265/70R17/C 112R RWL 12665 7 - 8.5 10.7 on 8 31.8 16 654 2470@50

Thread discussed tire size:
LT285/70R17/D 121R BSW 14517 7.5 - 9 11 on 8 32.7 16 636 3195@65

This tire is only .900 larger in Dia / .450 in Rad
This tire is only .300 wider in section width / .150 from center of wheel

This isn't really enough to make any huge difference is it?
Size difference is neglible unless clearances are so tight from the factory and the Toyota designed geometry simply requires suspension modifications to accomodate this increase.

Mine has never rubbed, even on the trails it barely touches the body mount, as for the UCAs it never rubbs even when the tires are aired down.
