What they need is an FJ Hybrid, which would solve the gas sucking problem AND allow deeper excurisions into the backcountry with less need to carry gas! Further, with Toyota being the "master" of the hybrid, and GM already having an SUV hybrid, this makes a lotta sense!
BTW, what mileage is everyone pulling on average? I'm running a pretty consistent 15-16 mpgs.
We just took a trip up to Golden and back last weekend, and I got 22mpg. It was almost all highway. That is the most I have gotten yet. When we were driving back from Texas last October, I was doing almost 20mpg.
If they continue w/the FJ, why don't they come out w/a regular gas model w/better gas mileage and a bigger gas tank?
It was never clear to me why the FJ engine "required" premium, but runs ok on regular. A better marketing plan in this day and age would be to increase the tank size (MAF proved you can add 19 gallons more under the rear) and run it on regular in a detuned (or hybrid) engine that gets better mileage to increase range and lower fuel operating costs.
Just my 2 cents on the topic.
I could not have said it better myself. I traded a Ford F-150 crew cab, 5.4 V8, with a 27 gallon gas tank running on regular gas (16-19 MPG). Don't get me wrong, it was my choice to get back into the off-road scene. When I first looked at the FJ, I knew I had to get one.
Being a daily driver, I wish we had a better gas mileage/tank size. However, look how fast the gas situation has changed in a year. Toyota had the FJC in design for how many years? They can do great things, but looking into the future is too much to ask. I guess I will have to add a gas tank mod to the ever changing list.

Prices will go back down anyway...just have to wait it out the same as last time they went crazy back when they came out with the miserably small cars in the late 70's.
i just got yet another oil change from the dealer. i was walking my dog around their grounds (in the back actually) and started to chat it up with a sales manager who was on a "break". went from talking about dogs, hunting, tri-tronics ecollars, to guns. and finally he asked me what car i own. when i told him the FJ he just shook his head. he told me car sales in general are at their lowest he has seen them in a long time. he said that the FJ still holds that hype but they are not selling. they ordered a FJ Criuser Trail Team for a customer who actually backed out at the last min and lost his deposit. He said they could not get rid of the truck because no one wants something like this. I didn't get to see it because they shipped it off to another dealer to "let it be their problem". Said the tires alone scared customers away (gas milage).
I did ask him if the FJs sales were good and he said "NO WAY. A lot of people test drive it and check it out but most people have no intention to buy it." and a funny thing he said was it was mainly early 30s females that do this. Weird. He thinks as gas prices go up he doubts they will sell any type of truck/large SUV. He thinks they will only do special orders on the FJ until things get back to normal with gas prices.
I have to admit, gas prices scare me right now. I sound like a cheapo but I haven't been driving my FJ as much these past two weeks or so. Even though our other car takes premium also, it has a lot better milage.

Re: 2008 Last year of the FJ?
i think you will see a diesel motor in the FJ soon...maybe in the next 2 years or so....toyota already makes 2 diesel motors that will fit the FJ..... 1 in the prado and..... 1 in the LC 70 platform ....both of these are in production already overseas.......RR
well we will all find out for sure when we start seeing the 09s on the lots in a couple months right. But it would suck if the discontinued it but it would also be cool because that means no more will be produced and that would mean we all would have a pretty rare find in a car.

What was Toyota's reason for discontinuing the original FJ series when they did?
Maybe there are some parallels between the trends for the FJ 40 and the FJC that can be measured to figure out what Toyota might be inclined to do? Remember this quote: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it".
Or.....we can just wait and see!

Toyota put out a tech advisory; while they recommend Premium Fuel for optimal performance, regular gas could be used.
I haven't noticed too much difference on regular driving, but I haven't wheeled with regular gas yet.
