I think a chainsaw is an important, and often overlooked, part of any recovery gear kit. I try to carry my little Stihl MS 170 whenever i'm on the trail. It is very compact, and it will get most jobs I'd encounter on the trail done. Anyone figure out a way to securely mount one up internally or externally? Does anyone make a product specifically for mounting a chainsaw? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First thought I had when I saw the title of the thread was "Man, that's gonna really hurt..."
Seriously, though, I can't think of any easier way to stash a chainsaw than putting it on the rear cargo mat and using a bungee net to hold it down. Chainsaws are such an irregular shape that you'll probably have a hard time finding some specific mounting clasp. You'll have to fashion your own custom solution, I'm sure...

If you knew my last girlfriend you'd take your chances with the saw any day! I agree that it is easy and secure to use ratchets in the rear, but it isn't an option for me when I have about 200 lbs. (or more) of chocolaty brown love riding back there. I was thinking of having my fabricator friend make me a divider to keep the dogs in the back and designing a chainsaw mount that would attach to the front side of the divider (facing the passenger compartment). I could always strap it to the roof rack, but I would rather keep it protected from the elements. I don't know how well my little wimpy saw would handle being caked in mud. These guys are why I can't keep it in the rear usually.

Good looking dogs, I have a black lab myself. Maybe they make a case for yours like I have for mine. That way you could strap it to the rack and out of the elements.

Here's an idea: Look into those M-Pac slotted panels that mount in the rear panel area, or on the inside of the rear door. You could thread some small ratcheted straps through the slotted holes and secure the small chainsaw that way.
Also, I would find some sort of leak-proof bag to store the chainsaw, to prevent chain oil from dripping all over the inside of the FJ...

Good call on the bag to keep things clean. I don't want chain oil all over in there. The M-Pac may be a good option. I'll check into it.

A puppy is way down the line for us. We have 3 dogs (6 being the oldest) a house cat, a barn cat, and 11 horses. I am on critter overload.

They are only 10 months old, so pups are a ways down the line for Chanterelle too. I know all about critter overload. I used to have a verifiable zoo in my house in Missoula. Now it is just the Dogs, a gecko, and about 15 Blue Azure poison dart frogs.
