OK, I have to vent a little, I received my recall letter yesterday and called 3 local dealers hoping one of them will let me upgrade the tires at the same time. I am willing to pay the difference or even few bucks more but obviously not full price

And so far, I have gotten 3 different responses:
Dealer #1 - Will not let me upgrade. What they will do is dismount all 5 tires and inspect each one and only replace the ones that needs it. So there's a possibility I might end up with a mix of new and old tires? Not to mention the recall notice I received said otherwise:
"What will Toyota do?
Any Toyota dealer will confirm all five tires, including the spare tire, to determine if they are within the affected tire-to-wheel assembly range and replace all involved tires with new tires at NO CHARGE to you."
Above statement does not mention anything about inspection like the TMS guy/gal have said before. In fact, it is closer to what another member (Toyotatech?) have said, in which my vehicle does fall into the VIN range and the tire DOT serial # range.
Dealer #2 - Will not let me upgrade but will be happy to order whatever I want and charge me full pop for it

The quote I got for 5 BFG AT was like $1,200
Dealer #3 - Clueless about this recall and after about 3 phone calls, he will get back to me on Monday to see if Toyota is willing to do anything about the upgrade... I am not holding my breath...
I know this has been said but I think Toyota really should give customers the option to upgrade. Why waste another set of tires if some customers are going to swap them out in the near future anyways? Last time I checked on tirerack.com prices, there is a difference of approximately $60 per tire (Dunlop AT20 vs BFG AT). I am sure most are willing to pay the difference! And if Toyota is really the one supplying the replacement tires (like dealer #1 said), then I am sure they are getting a big discount on them, so I am willing to pay more if necessary.
Anyways, maybe we should bring this matter to the tree huggers, afterall, nobody wants to consume unnecessary tires now, do we?
