"Factory" OEM Tow Hitch Install

I realize that other threads have posted information concerning a hitch install but I thought this might make a sticky or something and could help with people searching for the information based on the use of the correctly named accessory - Tow Hitch.

Here is my install report with pictures based on my experience:

FJ Cruiser "Factory" Tow Hitch Installation

Hope it can help someone here.

Re: "Factory" OEM Tow Hitch Install

WOW - I plan to add one and would never guess it would have looked like that (small receiver piece) and been that tedious. Much different from the cage style you put on pick em up trucks. Very informative and great info!!!! Thanks.

Re: "Factory" OEM Tow Hitch Install

These instructions are a quite a bit better than whats on that one page on the net. Definitely would have been a help if you posted just a day before, lol. I put mine on Friday.

I was scammed by member "vlocci" please avoid him at all costs. Paid $400 for a roof rack and only received 4 cross bars...had to purchase a new one from toyotapartsoutlet.com. ended up spending over $840 to get a complete rack on my ride.

Re: "Factory" OEM Tow Hitch Install

thanks for this info! It GREATLY helped me!! This is a MUST instead of getting the dealer installed option. I got my hitch from Affordable Parts and Accessories wholesale to the public. for $156 and $86 for the converter, $26 shipping to Mich. A deal compared to the $400 the dealer wanted to install it!!

Might I add:
1.) Truly a 2 man job if you want to do this right. esp removing the bumper.
2.) Squeeze the clips to remove the parking sonar connectors and hitch connector cover.
3.) Pulling off the side bumper fascia was really hard. I was a little afraid of breaking it but with a great deal of force they popped off. MUCH easier to re-install.
4.) Installing hitch with 6 bolts to the bumper - be sure to use torque sequence. Use this for installing 1st bolt to last also. My bumper holes were a little off and it took some doing to make them fit. It actually sits a little crooked on the bumper. I used a little WD-40 to clean out the holes since I had sand and dirt in them. If you have a 12MM tap that is suggested to run thru there and clean them out. Easy to cross thread with dirt in there and the bolts are a little self tapping.
4.) You'll need to really twist to get your head under the dash to install the converter. My wires had WHITE tape on the and made it quite easy to get at the connector.

This was really easy, just time consuming. Highly suggested adder. If you need any pics or help just let me know!

Re: "Factory" OEM Tow Hitch Install

BobbyNGa,
Thanks for the pictures on the relay install under the dash. They were great! The factory instructions were sorely lacking on any information regarding this relay. Again, Thanks.
