Land Rover Defender Vs. Fj Cruiser

If it were available in the USA how many of you would have purchased a Land Rover Defender instead of an FJ?

If they offered it with a diesel I know I would get the Defender for sure unless it's uncomfortable for tall drivers.

Re: Land Rover Defender Vs. Fj Cruiser

Two different price points. The Defender is at least twice as expensive as the FJ.

I'd by two FJs.

Re: Land Rover Defender Vs. Fj Cruiser

Depends what the price difference is.

One attractive thing about the FJ to many is that it was cheaper than a Jeep Rubicon and I'm sure it would be cheaper than a Defender.

I also looked at clean used Discovery IIs which lose a dramatic amount of value over the course of a couple years ownership. They can be easily modded for impressive off roading and rock-crawling.

Re: Land Rover Defender Vs. Fj Cruiser

People have mentioned price which is a valid point. Lets say the Defender is around 42k bucks and the FJ is around 28k. I think I would still get the Defender and hang onto it more years. A lot of people put more than 40k into their FJ once they modify it but would it be worth it if there is a Defender on the market?

Re: Land Rover Defender Vs. Fj Cruiser

Hate to sound biased here... I've been working on Rovers for about three years now. Don't get me wrong, I love my FJ and would trade it for nothing. But the more I get into taking the FJ apart, build and reworking it, the more I realized this vehicle is not all it was hyped up to be. It's simple and goes back to the engineering of the entire vehicle. If you look at the vehicle completely, there has been almost nothing that has been build specifically for offroading. Engine and transmission are from 4runner/tacoma. Axles the same. The frame is designed like the prado (lots of offroad history) The body is weak and flimsy, (I have fender tears and bulges.)

The Land Rover is build for offroad driving. Every aspect of these vehicle is built around going off road. Land Rover developed hill decent control. Land Rover developed terrian response. People laugh at them becuase 99% of their owners choose to install 22'' Asani chrome wheels and drive their kids to school every day. I personally have had every Land Rover model (95 model year and up) offroad and have to say, with the exception of freelander and LR2, there is not a prodect they make than cannot go head to head with even our most modded FJ's. (Offroad tires included on Rover's side)

I would love to own a new defender.

I would warranty everything I could break on it myself. But that list would be very small...

On the contrary. They have ample head room, although the seating is has a little less shoulder room. Oh, and the Defender is available ONLY in diesel in it's current production cycle.

Actually the Defender 90 Station Wagon (or the 110 as they are the same price) is 21,000 British Pounds. At todays exchange rate that is $31K U.S. roughly. Add in a bit of tarrif and shipping and I'm sure it would still be less than $40K.
