I think you've been misinformed, at least as far as Texas goes (I can't speak for any other states). I had my agent look into it even though they assured me no such changes had been instituted in Texas. After discussing it with State Farm's Claims Division they called me back and assured me once again that no such changes had been instituted in Texas. I requested a copy of my policy with the language in question underlined and they said they would do it ASAP. It should be on its way by tomorrow. Should there be a problem I'll report back.

What company do you have?
As for the guy that said it varys state to state, I know most do, thats why I asked and was told this was a change nationwide, not only in TN.
I use Erie now. It also includes roadside service.
I used General Casualty and American Family in the past, both based in WI but this year both their rates went through the roof trying to recover all the claims they paid on for the floods in the Midwest during 08. So I switched.
Re: Attention: State Farm Insured Owners - Off Road Use
This is a good time for all of us to take a look at our policies. I hate to say it, but the bottom line on all insurance companies is that they really don't want to pay claims and neither the company or the agent are your friends. Insurance companies assess risk through all sorts of channels that they don't want you to know about. Example: Your credit score is used in determining your rates. People in lots of debt pay higher rates. We know some people that had their rates across the board double after they filed for bankruptcy. As Sean K mentioned, they can drop you for never even having had an accident or making a claim.
Re: Attention: State Farm Insured Owners - Off Road Use
And one other little caveat. I had a buddy that did insurance claims and he owned a Jeep. The company he worked for regularly sent him out to assess trucks, jeeps and other 4x4 vehicles that were crashed.
He told me that his insurance company would deny a claim with any vehicle over a certain lift height. I think it was 4 inches or something like that. He told he personally denied people when he saw they had too high of lift on their trucks. They would write a check paying the amount to the person that was owed or already paid to the cancellation date, and then they would walk away.
So it might be something else to check. He did say most insurance companies had the same thing but did not know about it or did not have people that could recognize it on the vehicles like he could. He no longer works for them.
IMHO

In Hawaii, the price you pay also depends on what county you live on. When I was living in Honolulu my insurance every six months was about $525. When I moved to Maui it dropped to $490.

Trust me, I hope I'm wrong, I just want to present all the info I have and what I was told.

I called my insurance (nationwide) and asked and was told that i was covered as long as it was not competition/racing.
I gave them an example of me just driving on a dirt road and me rolling it what would happen.
Its just interesting to me what is considered off-road, a dirt road a gavel road? There are plenty of people who live off of paved roads. So if you get in an accident off of a paved road no coverage.
I think its different if you are just driving down a street/gravel road vs. flipped over from trying to go up a steep incline or rock formation.
Funny story, when i used to race my VW's on the drag strip i called and asked what would happen if i crashed on the track. They said just like most have posted here. If its being used in competition, or any timed event, no. So joking, i asked if i was ilegaly street racing and crashed i would beok, as long as it wasn't on a track or a timed event. He told me yes. Absolutely since it would be on marked roads. Nutty.
I'm going to have to call my agent tommorow regarding "offroading".

I have state farm and am pretty pissed... I got my 6 month statement for JUST my FJ and my bill is $630... I just got a quote with geico with the same coverage and they quoted me at less than $450/six months.
Does anyone know about geico?
I am insured through farm bureau, $448 every 6 months for a commercial policy, unlimited mileage, comprehensive 500k/1mil, deductible is 250. They cover my offroad use too. You have to be a member, 30 bucks a year in MO. They carry my farm, home, an life as well so the $30 is no big deal.
