Re: Attention: State Farm Insured Owners - Off Road Use
I've been with State Farm for over 25 years and they currently insure 4 vehicles for me, including my FJ.
They also previously insured my 6" lifted Jeep TJ w/35" tires and, after sending them pics and discussing all of the mods with my agent, the issue of the exclulsion of any off-road coverage was never raised. So, I'm not going to raise it now, but will be interested in what others find out about their off-road coverage.

Re: Attention: State Farm Insured Owners - Off Road Use
I've been with State Farm for over 30 years, and never had any problem with coverage for off-road use. I rolled a Toyota P/U over a cliff, and had to have a helicopter recover the vehicle - State Farm covered it. I had a FJ80 that I ripped the roof rack and parts of the roof off driving under tree limbs - State Farm covered it.
So, I have no complaints...

USAA dropped me for merely mentioning I was going to go recreational 4wheeling.
They said, "We only insure vehicles for conveyance to and from work or school"....no ****, that's really what they told me.
**** USAA. They can suck my ****.
But, at least I'm not bitter.
Sean
Now I need to call USAA and check too. I have been more than happy with USAA in the past, sorry about your bad experience Sean.
As for Geico, I had my motorcycle insured with them for the first year that I had it as I was misinformed that USAA did not insure motorcycles. Turns out that they did insure bikes, so I switched my bike over the them, as it was cheaper and better coverage. I don't have anything negative to say about Geico, but I never went through an accident with them.

DAMMMMMMMMNNNNNN that's some serious wreckage...
Guess I got to check my USAA coverage Sean can I use your name...
Sure....but I don't think it will get you very far.
***EDIT*** I should mention: USAA started out saying they would cover the vehicle (this was before I told them specifically that I had liability only) if it wasn't being used in competition. I told them plainly, "No, it will never be used in competition". I went on to tell them it doesn't even get driven on public streets (fireroads to the trail heads only) and that it rode on a trailer to the trails. That's when they dropped me and said they wouldn't even cover a 4x4 going off of pavement (in direct contradiction to their statement about covering it as long as it wasn't competition) at a lake to go fishing or something and that I only had liability so they wouldn't have to cover any damages to my vehicle anyway.
HTH. ****

There is a fine line between what they would consider intentional abuse or intent to defraud, but in most cases (99%) of off-road damage it will be repaired within the limits of your coverage.
Remember, an "adjuster" is really just a "negotiator", and the outcome really depends on who has the better negotiating skills.
I can tell you that State Farm is one of the best insurance companies around... whether you are the Insured or the Claimant (and I have USAA).

Complete misinformation.
I hope that comment wasn't directed at my experience with USAA. I assure you: my liability only coverage was cancelled on my truck. I then took my business to State Farm.
My guess is the USAA agent I spoke with and their manager didn't know WTF they were talking about....but it didn't change the outcome.
BTW: nice to see you around again. You've been missed.

Insurance pays for stupidity.
YMMV...
I read it all but I'm not really following it. What all happened here? Just got repainted cause of all the scratches/dings?

Re: Attention: State Farm Insured Owners - Off Road Use
Yup, damage occurred while wheeling.
2 Huge dents, pinstriping from trees, etc. It ended up being a full repaint down to the mirrors, doorhandles & bezel... about $4k
Took surprisingly little negotiating... in fact the State Farm area repair coordinator said "Insurance covers stupidity"... not calling Aggie stupid, he was just saying.
Coverage hinges on the circumstances, and the circumstances must be spelled out in your policy, they cannot be arbitrary. Generally speaking, "organized competition" is an exclusion and must be spelled out as such... also if the vehicle was being poerated in violation of the law or instrumental in the commission of a crime (felony) your coverage may be denied, but again it has to be spelled out.
Whoever gave you this misinformation is out of line. If a change happens to your coverage limits, you are offered a re-issued policy, which as the consumer you have full right to refuse and find another carrier.
So that's that.
*While we're on the subject (and I'm sure it has been discussed already), keep receipts for all your equipment, modifications, tools, etc. and check on getting a rider to compensate you for those... some carriers will balk at the replacement cost and try to substitute a LKQ part, or merely settle for money and let you replace the parts.
