Nice summary!
All-in-all, this was a smooth product launch.
But KLD has valid points (as always) and the only fair way to settle this is for Toyota to give free air dams with off-road lights to the first 20K buyers who so generously promote this vehicle in parking lots, gas stations, Internet forums and virtually everywhere else we go.
Are you listening Mr. Toyota?
I am sure Mr. TOYODA would (yes that is toyoda) be turning over in his grave for KLD's post! Great Post man, thanks for giving me the things to be looking for in mine when i get it tonight.

You know, after perusing this forum compiling a list of problems myself, I'd have to agree. I think the FJ is a great vehicle, and I can't wait to get my hands on one. That said, it seems to have a lot of idiosyncracies for a Toyota, especially one that is based on a model that has had years of production-run. Maybe I'm being picky? Don't flame, just making an observation. The problems mentioned won't keep me from buying, but they are a bit discouraging.
Besides, I know Toyota has had a history of standing behind their product. If this were a Cheverolet or Ford with these problems, I would be more worried.

I think that is a wise choice because I do not know that we have any hard data on the actual numbers of vehicles that have experienced the listed problems.
We also don't always hear back from individuals that site a problem i.e. "air conditioner lights that wont shut off" (the dial was rotated all the way)

Good observations. All cars have their problems, especially during the first year. My *other* car has a lots of little quirks. We call it the car's *character*. That's the difference in owning something you enjoy and owning another *tool* to get you back and forth to work: problems turn to character.
Look forward to ownership. Gotta sell the VW first.

I'm in the 16,xxx neighborhood... I'll skip the air dam/lights and accept a set of 5 premium AT or MT tires to replace the junk stock Dunlops. And maybe a dealer coupon for a free windshield replacement when my luck finally runs out.

Let's not push our luck. I think a $300 item (that it already way late--dammit!) is a reasonable gesture. And we should be expected to cover installation costs. Furthermore, we should be required to fill out an extensive on-line questionaire to qualify for the air dam and hence, provide invaluable market research to further improve the product.
Asking for a $1250 set of all-terrain tires when you knew darn well what you were buying is unfair, greedy and unrealistic. I would concur that an upgrade path should be made available, but since it wasn't and I took the deal on the table... caveat emptor.
And then to ask for a replacement windshield is beyond the pale (is it Toyota's fault that trucks kick up rocks?).
PS- the ridiculous questionaire that was mailed to me went right in the garbage
PPS- Don't know much about the Dunlops, but the Bridgestone Duelers are actually good road tires. I'm keeping mine for long road trips.

Take your pills and breathe deeply.... I suppose I should have thrown a couple dozen smileys in my post.

My only objection EVER of the FJ detractors was just that... unlike what Kdog did, where he phrased his OBSERVATIONS in a positive light. Many detractors just used their experience as a spring board to trash Toyota, FJ, and the whole experience.
