I might be crazy but has anyone considered....

Doing a custom paint job. I'm talking about buying the vehicle from the dealership and repainting it completely, or maybe better yet having their collision autobody shop do it?. I really want the flat military green. Am I crazy?

Not crazy, creative. I thought about it, but a color change is a pain in the ass. Engine compartment and interior makes it so you have to strip the car. Unless...... You can get the black, then it would not be as difficult. Regular paint job, plus door jambs is not that hard. Black interior locations and engine compartment with the sema green would look better than original all sema green.

Re: I might be crazy but has anyone considered....

Ya come to think of it, it would probably be really involved. It would probably cost 2-5 grand to get it done properly. I hate when car manufacturers show us stuff and then not put it out. If I knew i'd be able to get the green, I'd seriously put my money down on it right now. I'm not really into the yellow or blue. I'd probably look at the black, but black is the most brutal colour to maintain, especially if your taking it off road. I wish they'd give us some more options for colours! I'd love to see a strong grey or gunmetal colour.

If you only want a flat color, it would not be that difficult. Sanding, then some flat paint, then sanding, then flat paint, then sanding, then flat paint....

Then the divorce, because your touching the FJ more than your woman...

Always a catch.

Seriously though, if you just wanted flat paint you could half ass it yourself and it wouldn't look that bad. Flat paint is much easier to work with than the regular auto finish is. Think of a military vehicle. We spray canned them. It's a special paint, but it's a spray can just like Krylon. Shake and shoot. With some significant tape work, you could pull it off.

To be honest a metal flake military green would be pretty nice too. I'm good with a krylon can(wild style) but beyond that I don't think I'd be up to doing it myself, rather leave it to the pros. I do prefer earth tones and neutral colours alot.

Im still considering painting the white roof. As long as the rest of the car is new and unfaded it will be a sinch to match. And the fact that its only the roof means that any screw ups fom a cheap paint job is less noticable. If I did the all custom paint job Id definitaly get the tan color.

Painting a car a different color the right way costs at least $5k unless you disassemble it yourself and send the pieces.

however to match just the top of the FJ would be an easier job and would not require disassembly. spoke with a local paint shop here and they said expect between 1-2k for the job.

of course toyo's not making a pine green (think oak a's) - so f it. i dont want a solid color in any of the available colors. the only one that would really needs it would be the silver FJ - the white/silver - what the hell toyoDUH?? the all yellow would look a little too much like the xterra IMO. the all black reminds me of a banned member. all blue - um,....no. black cherry??? no.

Re: I might be crazy but has anyone considered....

The SEMA green is OK, but if I could pick *any* color it would be forest green (pine green like the above poster) aka British Racing Green. Would look great with the white top. Overall, I think this should have been on their original list of colors. It was a popular color for Tacomas as well, at least here in the PNW area.

Re: I might be crazy but has anyone considered....

Does anybody know anything about those "rough" paint jobs? I've seen them a few times, typically on older trucks. But I've been told it is scratch resistant and hides dirt a bit.

I'm not sure what it's called or how it's done, but it kind of looks like a thick spray paint (usually black) that is lightly spackled over the origional color. any info/advice?
