Back from my sad trip to Ohio, cracked my frikkin' windshield.
Many of you already knew that my father passed away, at the age of 67, last Thursday. Between the exhorbitant amount of money that the airlines wanted for a ticket, and the recent terrorist activity, Mrs. 5150 and I decided to drive to Cincinnati, in the FJ, instead of flying. We left this past Saturday morning, drove straight through, and made the 1072 mile trip in 15 hours.
First for the bad news, on the way home today a small rock hit the bottom of the windshield, on the passenger's side, nicked the glass, and a 6 inch angled crack went up the windshield from the point of impact. I don't think the rock was that big or even it hit that hard. I was shocked at the size of the crack that subsequently formed. I'd think that a window that is obviously a rock magnet would be more durable. I was so pissed off and upset, what else can go wrong this month?
Anyway, the nice thing is that the insurance companies in Florida are required to replace the windshield without requiring a deductible. The bad thing is that the repair is set up but the repairman cannot get the windshield from Toyota because they are "on Nationwide Back Order." They also informed me that there are no aftermarket FJ windshields available yet because it is so new. So, I have no idea when I'll be able to have it replaced. In fact I'm very wary of letting anyone do this after some of the things I've read here about the hack-jobs. I kind of wonder if Toyota is aware that this is an issue and has halted production as they sometimes do.
Anyway, other than that the trip went fine and my Black Diamond FJ looked really good, immediately behind the hearse, with my mother riding shotgun. This car is even more special to me now than it ever was.
Thanks again to all of you for your support during this rough time.

Once again I'm sorry for what happened with your dad. I'm also sorry to read about your windsheild. But I'm also glad you and your had a safe trip and made it back O.K.
Hope the rest of the month goes well with you.

Sorry for your times, they'll change. But the expression "when it rains it pours" is usually evident in times of stress and sadness. I've been hit by several rocks lately and yesterday a small one hit in the same spot as yours with the same results. Bummer. I took it all the way to Michigan from Texas and all I did was collect dead bugs. Too bad about the backorder. Maybe Toyota will feel compelled to do something about it. maybe not.

Tony:
Welcome back. And, of course, I'm still sorry to hear of your loss and safe return.
By my calculation, there are too many windshield incidents based on the number of incidents relative to the number of active people in this forum. Just seems there are far too many cracks and breaks.
To that end we need toyota to be aware of this. Be sure to add your incident to the poll:

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. There is never a good age to lose a parent.
I found out at age 30. I think as we become adults some of us may underestimate the impact it may have... I know I did. Death and loss remind us to live and love in the moment. God Bless.

Welcome back Tony and Bert,
I'm very sorry for your family's loss. Losing a parent is something we, (well most of us) will all have to face someday. I know from experience, it will get much easier over time.
Keep your chin up, and join your forum friends for some laughs when you can.

Cracked mine from top to bottom coming back from Boise this weekend. Sucks. I'm not fixin' it till I get moved up there, either.

So Percy, this means you guys decided where to move? I missed it.
Congrats on the move! How are you handling the job issue? What's Boise like? We drove through Pocatello in 1995, and it was gorgeous. Too d*mn cold for me, but gorgeous nonetheless.
