dealer installed running board rip off

when i purchased my FJ i had ordered the running board option but was told that the dealer must install it since the vehicle i was picking up did not have it yet.

it has been a week and when i pulled up next to the other FJ my cousin bought, the running boards are different. i seemed to have a generic universal RB. the grooves were straight lines and the end caps look cheap and flimsy. his and all of the others i have checked look better and have a nicer pattern on the grooves. has anyone else experienced this? i am wondering if the FJ's that didn't come stock with it all get this other one from toyota or my dealership just ripped me off (by charging me OEM price but for a aftermarket item). i am calling them first thing tomorrow.

Thats what you get for buying running boards! but seriously, yes that sounds like a rip off and doesnt surprise me since dealers are so dumb.

Some dealers do this all the time. You really have to ask for Toyota parts in many cases or you'll get just this treatment. Call and complain and let them know this is something you are planning on putting on their survey. Some times that helps.

Can you do this in your FJ?

I would insist on Toyota original if the one you have is not original. Can you post a picture of it so we can see what you are talking about?

Alternatively you can ask the dealer to remove it and give you the money back and you buy the original running board from the forum. You might save yourself a few hundreds $$$$.

Re: dealer installed running board rip off

ok so i just called them and here's the answer i got. after a slight hesitation, she said that all of the dealer installed items that they put on our are done so from an outside vendor. the vendor she claims uses parts specifically for the FJ but stopped short of being toyota oem parts. she said she will get back to me and i'll see how it goes from there. this bait and switch really irked me and my next call is to corporate if this doesn't get resolved.

I would call Toyota and complain anyway. They should not be doing this and just because you caught them doesn't make it okay. If you agreed to factory running boards and you paid for factory running boards, this is unacceptable.

Check your paper work, how much did you pay?

Re: dealer installed running board rip off

I paid nearly 1200 for both runing boards and roof rack. I just got several calls from my salesperson, sales manager, and accesories person and it is concluded that the factory running boards are port installed (meaning when the FJ arrives at destination prior to dealerships). They said that since mine came without it it would have to be installed there and wouldn't look the same. So now I demanded that I get the factory ones since that was the package I was sold. I am not that big on running boards, but upon purchase I just wanted every option. Now they are checking to see if those running boards are actually available. I told them I would drive to their port located in New York and get them but no way in hell was I taking the ones they gave me. I will post pics of the current one when my adapter to upload gets here.

No link to pic either.

Thats none-sense. Eventhough it is port installed options. They could get these parts shipped from toyota and install them at their shop for you. This is what my dealer did. If they tell you it will take several weeks to get them you should ask them for refund for the running board and buy from someone here. There are several original ones for sale at $250...Keep the difference...
