Question Tire Pressure Warning System ?

I can't find it in the owner's manual, but does anyone know if the FJC will have a tire pressure warning system? I thought they were Federally mandated for 2007? And, if yes, since the pressure monitor sensors are in the wheels, how would a wheel swap effect the system? Are the sensor movable? (the antennas, incidently, to pick up the radio signals, are in the side mirrors... )

Re: Tire Pressure Warning System ?

Toyota's tire pressure monitoring system is pretty simplistic (on the Matrix at least). It simply looks at rotation speed of the wheels and if there is a mis-match, the warning goes off. That is why they include a reset button under the dash.

Re: Tire Pressure Warning System ?

It will have the system, they will be in the wheels. Some Toyotas use the ABS system to detect rotational speed differences between the wheels. On the SUVs the pressure sensor in in the back of the vavlestem and yes it is a pain in the ass, I have had many customers complain about them when they change wheels. You have to have all 5 sensors swapped and retasked when you change wheels. It is a good idea to have them, low tire pressure is the biggest reason people have blowouts on the highway. Metal heats up when you bend it so when you go from a round shape to flatter on a low pressure tire over and over again at high speed it will heat up a ton and blow a tire out fairly quickly.

Sorry! Its gonna suck addin new wheels and it is illegal for a Toyota store to disable the system. I was told if you look hard enough on the internet you can probably find a way to disable it, but we can't do it.

so it would be going off all the time on the FJ if you were off-road lol

edit:

I just Google'd the whole thing, and it looks like the deadline to comply with this is vehicles manufactured after November 1, 2006. So...the first run of FJ's might not have it, but later on in the year they probably will.....

Re: Tire Pressure Warning System ?

There is a speed component to the warning system so it wouldn't go off at lower speeds, but again the ABS based system is only on the cars not SUVs. I would have to check to see if its on the car based SUVs (Highlander or RAV) but since this is the FJ forum, I don't think I need to, muahahah!

Re: Tire Pressure Warning System ?

The whole regulation is flawed. It is one of those things that started out as something to protect the average car owner who doesn't check their air pressure on a regular basis, but ended up being a pain in everyone in the car and tire industry's rear. This was all thanks to the Ford explorer/Firestione tire fiasco from a few years ago. It's a of the TREAD act. It doesn't provide true security to the public as was intended. Hopefully the FJ does have a direct monitoring system as some have suggested. It is a far better system. The wheel speed method just uses the existing ABS hardware and incorperates new software that identifies when a wheel is rotating at a rate different from the others. That sytem won't do a bit of good if all 4 tires are low. It is a relative difference system. It was the Auto manufucturers creative solution to the regulation. The other big problem is that the regulation does not require the driver be notified until a tire is 25% below min cold inflation recomendation for 20 minutes, which can put the tire out of it's safe operating (load carrying) range. It creates a false sense of security to the driver. No warning light must mean no problem. Not necessarily so.

Here is a link to a good article about the regulation from the Tire industry's perspective. Tireindustry.org

Re: Tire Pressure Warning System ?

I did a quick search in the FJC owners manual and haven't turned up anything on the tire pressure warning system or indicators for it. Maybe we'll get to use the old fashioned tire pressure gauge system.

Seriously, it has the transponders in the valvestems. It wasn't a joke.
