Black step bar

Having to step out of our new FJ today after church, I found myself having to put my weight on the door sill and stepping out from there. The alternative would have been stepping down onto the ground and there was no way I could do that without rubbing my pants leg on the wet and muddy door sill. So I'm seriously considering the black step bars that southeast Toyota offers. Just wondered if anyone else has and ACTUALLY USES some type of step bar on your FJ. Do you find them useful? Or do you have them and find them useless? Or do you just jump out and hope for the best? Seriously though, I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Re: Black step bar

I don't have the Toyota ones but I do have aftermarket steps. I imagine that they are quite similar. Being a 6ft male, I got them for the looks but my wife and kids use them as steps into the FJC. I have used them to reach the center of the roof rack and I have tested their strength by jumping up and down on them. They don't budge. Mine are attatched with 2 bolts in 2 places on the frame. I would imagine that the Toyota steps attach in the same location. I was concerned at first and thought they should be attached in 3 or 4 places on the frame but I have no complaints about them.

Hope this helps!!

Re: Black step bar

I've installed rails from Bentup.com to help get in and out of the truck. I also had them line-x'd for improved grip. My wife is very happy with them; she is 5' tall and gets in and out with no trouble now. They also have greatly improved access to the back seats and roof rack. IMO the best way to go

Re: Black step bar

Mine are nerf bars. I'm 5 ft, VERY useful. Will usually eliminate the dirty pants issue. Nerf bars are inexpensive and bolt to frame in 2 places also. Very sturdy.

Re: Black step bar

Maybe I'm missing something here...I have sliders that only stick out 1.5 inches and my pants and legs still get dirty and boy just wait until that metal gets hot enough for a nice burn (though you'll only do that once)!!!

If you need something to step on, go with the actual step sliper or running board, I would not use a regular slider route (unless you wheel a lot). What Mudder has looks good for your needs.

Re: Black step bar

I have the SET bars and I really like them. I am 6'2" and when I get out the gap between the 2 steps is in a good location for me to step out and not use the bars and it doesn't hit the back of my leg. My wife uses the steps, so it works for both of us. I can also stand on them to wash the top.

I've found the N-FAB at TRD (link from forum) for $315, the Predator from FJC Off Road Gear Store (another link from forum) for $330.
Hey Mudder, do you remember where you got your Nerf Bars? I'd like to take a closer look at those before I make a decision. Thanks. Rog

I'll second that! Wish I'd gone with the Line-X though. Had my Bentups powder coated and now the areas where we step are all scuffed up.
