How strong do you think that rack is....

My tire is GOING on the roof, one way or the other, because one of these is going on the back......

I know about trailers, but a hitch mounted carrier is what I like best, day to day. I ride 3-4 days a week in the summer.

The rack almost looks strong enough to hold the spare. But I am hemming and hawing, cause I know there will be an after-market rack that WILL take the spare.

Thoughts?

Re: How strong do you think that rack is....

All you want to do is put one of the motorcycle tires on the toyota roof rack? I should hope so...I am planning on having at least 4 bicycle mounts on the rack and I hadn't even given it a second thought. If you are worried about how to mount it, I'm thinking we should be able to strap air to the top and let him hold your wheel.

Ok, I was a little slow, the spare tire on the roof...yeah, I don't know if air could hold that...

kidding aside, I bet the rack could hold it fine, but you would need some sort of aftermarket attachment for the tire. I imagine you still want to secure it from being easily stolen.

John,
Of the many bikes that will at some point find themselves on the FJC's rack, here are few: Trek OCLV Custom, Trek Fuel 100, Single Trac 970 Hardtail, and the wife is riding a Specialized Dolce Elite and buddy of mine who just got into road biking is now riding a Specialized Roubaix. My Pop is finally relaxing on a Custom Titanium Colnogo (which could be one of the single most beautiful things on this planet). Friends bikes that will probably hitch a ride to Moab are a Yeti ASR-SL, Elsworth Truth, Intense Tracer, Santa Cruz Blur, a couple different Cannondales and if I can ever find an old frame I want to build a single speed fixed gear.

And for all you smart@sses out there. NO, I would not ever consider putting even the cannondales on the Element.

Yeah it looks pretty beefy. If anyone gets up close with a tape measure.......

Theft is not really an issue up here...knock on wood....haven't locked my house in 20 years and the keys never come out of the explorer....course if my FJ really does arrive I might have to hide the keys under the seat.

Re: How strong do you think that rack is....

here is one for yakima racks, shouldnt be too hard to find something that will work with the FJC factory one, maybe even a TRD/toyota accessory in the near future. even has a spot for a padlock.

alternately you could just get a lift and bigger tires, thus insuring that anyone attempting to steal your spare is risking certain death if they drop it on themselves...

Another plus for a Moab meeting, biking, 4wheelin, not ever going home. I can see it now the slick rock parking lot packed with FJC's.
