Factory tow hitch

What's the class of the tow hitch? or how much weight can I put on it? I'd like to hang my Motojack rack http://www.motojackrack.com/ on it and carry my KTM motorcycle.

Re: Factory tow hitch

class III, tongue weight of 500 pounds

the KTM might be okay, will depend on which model. E.G. the 990 Adventure might be pushing it with a dry weight of 440 pounds...

hope that helps

Re: Factory tow hitch

Your manual will give you the info. When I bought mine I asked about the factory hitch. My dealer claims and installs the "Reese" as factory. I purchased mine online. It was significantly different and "Toyota".

Re: Factory tow hitch

So...this thread now has me thinking. Actually Tex-FJ pointed this out to me when I first met him for a FJ Happy Hour meet. I'm just disappointed that my factory options tow hitch isn't actually a Toyota installed one but one from a 3rd party.

If not mistaken the factory Toyota one is recessed a bit into the bumper. With mine it's clearly underneath the bumper and you seem to loose about 1" of rear departure angle because of it. Well I'm not sure but you can see from this Toyota website shot. Then again it could be some other vehicle in that pic and all the FJ tow hitches look like the one we had installed on ours.

Can ANYONE confirm this please?

Re: Factory tow hitch

When you buy the Toyota hitch it comes with a new silver plastic piece so the hitch can sit higher. If you don't have that, it's not a toyota hitch and you are losing some clearance.

I think we all got screwed by Gulf States Toyota. Apparently all tow hitches on the FJ in this area are installed at the port by Gulf States and they are using Reese hitches instead of the Toyota hitches. I have yet to see a Toyota hitch on any FJ down here. We lose at least 1" and maybe more in rear departure angle. I’m not happy about this shortcut by Gulf States and plan on pointing out the issue to my dealer next time I take it in for service.

Yeah man, we should really discuss this and maybe get a group of us together. Heck I have no problem telling my dealer I didn't get what I paid for because it takes away from the rear departure angle. I actually needed that 1" last time wheelin when trying to reverse thru some stuff.

Hey Rubicon, could you please snap a picture of this and post up a decent size, clear shot of it. It'd be cool to have something to take into the dealer to show them what we're talking about.
