Good question. Not "hard" anodized for a few reasons.
Regular anodize is hard enough, way harder than naked aluminum.
You can't dye hard anodize the same range of colors you can regular anodize (atleast the company I use can't... denser pore structure?)

Thanks, that's what I figured with the color range.
My husband said that he would expect more color-fading in sunlight of the black - and that in a year, I'd be seeing purple, rather than black. Do you have any longer-term tested handles in the dark colors? Any fading?
TIA,
Sandi

With the angle of the FJ windshield I don't see these getting much sun, but possibly through the side windows I suppose. I haven't been making handles long enough to tell, but I do have some anodized parts on my bike, and though it doesn't sit outside all the time like my FJ does (there's a CNC taking up my garage...) none of those parts have faded visibly yet over the past 5 years.
I did some research on this after reading your post, and apparently a good seal will combat this (which I know my anodize company is good at) and the use of metal based dyes versus organic dyes. Organic dyes break down in sunlight much faster.
I need to ask them if they use organic or inorganic dyes and get back to you.
Thanks, I always like learning something new. This forum is good for that
