Here are a few pictures that show how tight it is on the left side. You can see that the clamp can't move up any more on that side. It doesn't contact the left but it is close.
Mine too. Looking out on from the inside out, I see the same on mine. It would probably be better if the bottom bracket was sloped.
The backing plate is made of aluminum. Drilled 2 - 1/8" holes for the letter "B" and 3/8" hole for the letter "O".

This afternoon, I installed the other ladder on my friends' 07 TRD SE. Based on my observations/notes during the initial install on own FJ, I made some modifications to the Gobi installation instructions mostly on the bottom bracket.
The issue that I've noticed is the movement of the aluminum spacer during the stage of tightening the two hex bolts. This movement can cause the uneven distance/clearance of the lower bracket to the top bumper. The bolts tip are rounded and will bite/make a mark on the aluminum spacer when they are tighten and tend to move specially the right side.
To make sure the mark/bite will remain in one spot, I used the bolt as puncher to make a pre-bite/mark on the spacer.
Here is the result:
The aluminum spacer should come from Gobi pre-punched to make the installation a lot easier. Also, I think the aluminum spacer should be wider to match the inside width of the bracket and little bit ticker.
Then I put a double side tape on the aluminum spacer and attached it to the door.
Ready to install the bracket, just aligned the holes to match the punch mark.
Alternately tighten the hex bolts. The bracket should be flushed to the door edge like this;
The installed bracket.

Did you initially fit the bottom bracket to mark the holes with the screws? If so, how did you put the AL strip back in the same place?
