Colt New Service

Guys (and gals),
I am looking for info on this model. I have recently acquired one and am really not interested in keeping it. If anyone with expertise has any idea of value, or lack thereof it would be greatly appreciated. I know the rich history behind this weapon, however I do make an attempt to keep only handguns that I feel comfortable firing and this is not one. Here are some specifics and I will have pics shortly.

Colt New Service .455 Eley converted to .45 Auto rounds (I am assuming that do to this change this piece requires moonclips).

Weapon is stock with exception of 2 things. 1.Barrel has been professionally shortened from 5.5" down to 2.5" (proof of the great job of this is that the front sight is original and the weld is clean as a whistle) and 2. It has been re-blued (probably about 30 years ago or so).

There are stampings everywhere on this...the British marks, Canadian marks, Colt Stallion, and Colt Armory mark (which I believe may have been placed with the changes from original). Grips are stock. The Lanyard Ring is still attached.

So that's the short and skinny to keep this from being a novel. Anyone have any ideas? I guess in a perfect world I would just like to trade it in for a G23.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Colt New Service

I have three thoughts about this.....

Gun Digest publishes books on gun values much like a Kelly Blue Book for cars. I was recently in a Borders Book Store and ran across a copy. For grins I looked up an old .22 cal Remmington Rifle I shot as a kid.

My second idea is to go online and search the manifacturer's historical archives. Regarding the same .22 cal rifle I learned from Remmington that it was made between 1941 and 1970 and that roughly 760,000 were made in that period. The rifle had no serial number on it (that's how it was made) so no further history was available.

You could also contact the NRA they too have experts in gun models and valuation.

Good Luck.
