I'd Like to Tell Toyota...This is for constructive suggestions to be made to Toyota regarding the FJ Cruiser. This is a flame free forum and heavily moderated.
One more note on paint thickness. Studies have proven that a clearcoat more that 2-3 mils thick will cause premature pealing and degredation. This is why you see some cars with the faded/pealing/oxidation. So thicker paint is not the answer. You need paint/clear coat with a higher mar resistance to solve the problem.
My Black Diamond has more chips than a can of Pringles. I hate to even get near it because everything scratches the thin paint. Toyota has officially become Americanized.

I had mine re-painted in January, and it has made a HUGE difference. It is nice not having to worry about the paint chipping any more. I do pick up the occasional chip with the new paint, but no where near the frequency I did with the crappy factory paint. Come to think of it, I have not had a single chip on the pillars since it has been re-painted. Nothing like a fresh coat of Voodoo Blue.
Best part was that it cost me just my insurance deductible.
One reason I got a white TT is because I heard the paint sucked. White holds up better I think. Not all cars come with bad paint though. My Silver 2001 BMW looks brand new like the day I bought it and I only wash it once every 6 weeks or so by hand. Acura also makes expensive cars but the paint is Honda quality. I know a few other European brands are also pretty good but you pay for it. I think it's worth having good paint if you want to hang onto a car for many years. In Europe that is what most people do so the paint has to be good. In the USA it's typical for people to change cars every 3 years so the paint isn't made to last very long.
DOH!!!
The Toyota White is a single stage paint. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... There is NO clear coat on Toyota white.
After just two years of garage parking, it makes for great bird **** stains, random rust spots, and fading! Way to go Toyota on saving a couple bucks on this two toned idea!

Its just Toyota being cheap. The EPA excuse is lame, since the EPA mandated water based paint back in the early 90s! Mercedes has the best paint, they use a nano tech paint by Dupont, which any maker can use, but chose not to.
Ironically the paint they use must be a little pricey. I recently had body work done on my FJ, and they had to inflate the initial estimate once they started mixing the paint. Due to the cost of tints or pigments used.
I didn't have to pay, the guy who hit me's insurance did
body work was so so. you could tell body work had been done, but it was only rear bumper so I didn't bother makeing a fuss. didn't want to have to drive the tiny yaris rental on beltway again, pretty scary. not sure if it was due to paint or person doing body work.
I would say that it cost more because they saw that insurance was paying for it.

My Girlfriend was a quality Manager for Toyota a while back, Toyota focuses all its energy into the mechanical aspects of its cars, or SUV's. Lexus would be the exception. Thats why the paint sucks, the fact stereo blows, but if you take care of your ride, It will last a few hundred thousand miles or so.
