I think it's funny that threads like this are back now that gas is under $2 a gallon.

Folks, I hate to say this....but it ain't gonna stay this low for long.

2 cents,
Sean
x2 Supercharger has plenty enough power and i am getting 18MPG on the highway.

V8 in an already heavy vehicle makes a super heavy vehicle.

You can make a 4 banger EXTREMELY powerful. For example the new Mitsubishi lancer evo is a 4 banger but puts out 400 bhp.
Acttualy,its 291hp. Not 400.
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Detailed Pricing and Specifications - MSN Autos
Though your right, itcan be built to 400, but they don't last to long after that.

That's not what I was getting at...

I drive crazy slow on the road, and never really use much more than a crack of the throttle crawling... if a 150hp engine could get me some better mileage and lighten up the truck, I'd take it.
That 150hp 4 banger isn't going to crawl very well on the trail, Unless you go to superlow gearing. And once you gear it, your gas mileage will suffer as a result. Low HP/torqueengine+4500pd vehicle =very poor performace.

I bought my FJ when gas was close to $4 a Gallon. And my last truck with a V-8 had near the same gas millage.I don't think gas price has ever played a roll in my purchasing.
While i did consider that i'd be using more gas when i purchased, i also considered the increase as well. I find it funny when gas prices go down start to increase we see a flood of threads about wanting V-8's, and superchargers.
Then they rise back up, and we see threads about wanting 4cyl, diesels, and hybrids. then of course there are those that start the "if gas hits $4.50 a gallon, i'm going to have to sell my FJ.
Buy summer next year gas willprobbly be close to $4.00 a gallon again.

Me personally, i probbly wouldn't have gone for the V-8 option if it were unless the price increase wasn't that much,as well as the mileage wasn't drastily different. Although it sure would be alot more fun! ..

x2...

I'm 24 hours into FJ ownership, so I can't be too loud since I haven't been anywhere but pavement yet. But when you compare a V8 4Runner to a V6, there's just not that much difference unless you're pulling something. And, given the choice, I'd take a V6 4x4 'runner off road over a V8. Now some will say I'm comparing apples to oranges, but when you're talking about the same weight on the same platform, I gotta beg to differ. Since the FJC is supposed to be a raw off-roader, I think if I needed something that would haul I'd have bought a Tundra (Or F-150, save the flames please)

So far, IMHO, the 6 in my FJ is definitely adequate. There is NO CHANCE that I'd consider driving a 4cyl (or hybrid... that's a joke unless it's a compact 2-seater) if they offered one, and I'd more than likely pass on the 8. I just think any v6 is, as a general rule, more versatile when you start talking about mods. I don't think Toyota made haste when they put the drivetrain of this truck together... If a V8 could have made for all that much benefit, you could count on them to capitalize on the option. I think that has a great deal to do with psychology.

My best advice to anyone who can't handle $4-5 gasoline is to go ahead and start shopping for a Prius We haven't seen the end of it.

Re: V8 Version Please!

I'd buy up a 6-cylinder Turbo-Diesel FJ in a heatbeat - all that low end torque would be unbeatable on the trail, and (on-road) fuel mileage would almost definitely increase substantially.

Now if only this wonderful state, the Communistwealth of Marxachusetts, would pull the Prius out of its bloated government arse and permit diesel SUVs then could this idea benefit anyone living under the Kommand of Devil Patrick and his Komrades.

As for those saying a 4-cylinder turbo could be made useful similarly to tuned import cars, bear in mind that those peak power levels are only attained at very high RPMs and are not accompanied by much torque. Something about revving my FJ engine to 7,000 RPMs for hours upon hours on the trails sounds none too appealing. Check out the Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV with its direct-injection turbo four cylinder that averages 17mpg or less and tell me how well that would work for us that tote around another 400+ pounds of vehicle, gear, and whatever else.

Personally, coming from five V8 gasoline engine cars prior to my FJ, our fuel economy is rather decent and the vehicle is by no means underpowered.

Re: V8 Version Please!

It doesnt matter what they put in the truck, people will always want more or something different.
Same thing in motorcycles. People begged for 100hp, then 100hp isnt enough. It goes on and on.
