I drove my first FJ60 (1985) the other day and I have to partially agree with the original post. Sort of like comparing my old 1987 560SEC Mercedes to the plastic cars they make today.

Mercedes has the same attitude.

I love my FJ, don't get me wrong, but no doubt about it - they made them better back then. The days of pride of manufacturing should be over - cars and trucks now are just a shadow of past quality.

As for as the excuse for the weak components to save weight for better mileage, that is laughable. The mileage is awful. Gigantic trucks with V8s get better, so that is an epic fail.

Proof of value then vs now? I could probably sell my FJ for $20k, it is perfect. There is an FJ60 on Ebay here at $12k already, with multiple bidders. New it sold for $15k. People are willing to pay over half the cost of my FJ for an 80s FJ60 w/ 80k miles. Why? Must be the quality. Toyota : Land Cruiser:eBay Motors (item 180369054212 end time Jun-21-09 20:10:06 PDT)
I had the same car (1987 Mercedes 560 SEC) Black -W- black int. Chrome Lorinser wheels. Nice, smooth, quiet car. Heavy and sucked the gas, but man was it smooth. Mine was stolen out of my garage (locked garage with alarm) during the DAY! It has never surfaced.

a FJ isn't going to win any street races either. It isn't about speed. It is about reliability, workmanship and quality.
Now if it had all three of those it WOULD be a perfect truck!!

Re: get off of your high horse

If Toyota could have just made a solid axle off-road FJ for all the hard core crowd. Lockers, clearance, etc
Then used IFS for the 4x2. They could have had a larger market share (Jeep Converts). Its the mamby pamby decisions to make one vehicle to fit all that makes this frustrating. They could have continued producing the FJ and really made a long lasting impression on the heritage instead of it fading because the fad is gone for the trendy grocery gitter crowd. Eventually loose the mommy mobile FJ and keep the off-road FJ in production on a limited basis. I know I would get another one if the heritage went on like the land cruiser era. Just look at the amount of hardcore wheelers here and all the jeepers that have continued buying and modding them since the early days of wheeling. Toyota could have had many more wheelers taken from other vehicle types, if they focused on this crowd instead of making this an "all in one vehicle" .
Ok I am done for now

Not to feed the rant, but the pricing you're seeing isn't Toyota's fault, it's the dealer's.

And a Toyota badge.

I love my FJ, but like any vehicle early in it's product line, it's not without fault. Not sure if we'll get to see them iron out the deficiencies, but I certainly hope so.
I also agree that 30K is too steep a price for an '08 4X2.

Obviously, some dealers are much more approachable than others when it comes to pricing. When I bought my FJ, in March, '06, my local dealer was asking $5K OVER MSRP for them! So, I made a deal elsewhere, and only after I did, the local dealer came back to me and said I could buy from them AT MSRP. I gave them a chance, and they blew it; it wasn't my fault they dragged their feet and lost a sale because of it. I am sure the powers that be at Toyota would have frowned on those business practices, as well.

I am holding out hope that the FJ will linger on, for at least a couple more years. If that happens, maybe Toyota will put some money into the R&D side and make some improvements and modifications to the FJ that will only make it that much better. I can dream, can't I?

Re: get off of your high horse

I don't really have any complaints. I have no interest in a solid front axle. I doubt Toyota could take any significant portion on the Jeep crowd. They are a very loyal bunch. Trust me, I've been at auto shows and ORV runs where I was the ONLY not american made vehicle. The stares from some people looked like they wanted to kill me...... this before even opening my mouth and giving them reason to want to kill me. Good thing the .45 was holstered and the 3" judge was in the stash box in the FJ.

Re: get off of your high horse

I wheel with all types of vehicles and seem to never see the rage of the hardcore Jeep crowd.. If I thought that was the case, I wouldn't want to wheel with those types anyway. There is some razzing, (most of it with a teasing tone), but not to the extend of feeling like I need my .45. I think there are many people on the fence of what type of vehicle they would buy and the abilities they each offer. Different strokes for different folks. I think there would be many that would pull the trigger on an FJ if it offered a solid axles, 4 to 1 transfer case, lockers, sway disco's etc. Since you have an IFS FJ, just think , if they come out with a solid axle version, you won't need to bother with it.
I know this is just wishful thinking, but that's why we are all allowed our opinions
