Re: get off of your high horse

Reality Check..

Its 2009..

and

Everything is made out of plastic..and it scratches...just like an Ipods screen.

Jeep Owners are like Harley Owners...They like them , they just do...(dont bother discussing it further)

OffRoading is a dying "Sport" ..So why would a car manufacturer put a "Solid Front Axel" in a vehicle that will surely spend its life in a Mall Parking Lot!

Fortunately, until all of our rights are removed from us, I can discuss it further, if I choose to.
I do agree they probably won't build one but that's why I called it wishful thinking.

I don't normally reply to these types of posts but I would like to put my two cents in worth. I work for Toyota (not sales) and help with the design and implementation of new vehicles. A lot of the problems that you are seeing with the light (frail) body designs and other integrations (Hino) are many times the result of what the customer is asking for. For example, the light body design on many of the toyota vehicles is a result of Toyota trying to save weight and then improve on fuel mileage. Our number one JD Powers complaint on the vehicle line that I work for is fuel mileage so we are trying everything we can to save an ounce or two here and there. One of the easiest ways is body weight reduction. Most people just do not use the vehicles the way we do here on the forum. They are daily drivers and every once in a while they haul some dirt or something in the back. I could go on and on with this but I do want to say that I have worked for several other companies and Toyota is one of the few companies where we really do try and think of the customer first.

The FJ I bought this week is my first Toyota but my family has been buying them for years. I think its unfair to suggest that Toyota is the only manufacturer out there to "not make cars like they used to." NO ONE DOES. I just finished driving a Jeep Liberty 2002 bought new in 2001....prior to that....I owned a Wrangler Sahara for 7 years. They just don't make them like they used to.....

I think its safe to say I will see my FJ work for more miles then either my Wrangler or my Liberty did. Wrangler had a new tranny at 65k. Liberty....at 90k.

Yes, dealerships can and do ask insane prices.....doesn't mean you have to pay it. I bought a 2008 4WD with 15k miles on it for 24k....this week.

True, unless he's talking about MSRP. Which is still pretty steep for a 4x2.

Still not as bad as Chevy. I went in looking at a new Camaro and they had a 5k mark up. I asked if they would take sticker, and the sales guy did everything he could to keep from laughing at me. He says..
"Sorry, but the mark up stays."
So i started laughing back at him.
He asks me..
"And what are you laughing at?"
I tell him..
"The fact that your company just declared bankruptcy and at any time this dealer could get the call that they will be one of the ones being closed down,... But yet you still don't want to deal. Good luck with that."

He wasn't smiling, nor laughing after that. Really is sad though. It wasn't like i was asking them to sell it to me at cost.
the chevy dealer down the street from me has black ss camaro's @15k over sticker.

Re: get off of your high horse

I'm not so sure the solid front axle is all it's cracked up to be by its proponents. Look at all the reports of "death wobble" from the SFA Jeep, Ford, and Dodge 4x4 crowd. The ride tends to be awful, too, with the worst riding vehicle of all time that I have driven being the Wrangler. There have been some pretty capable IFS offroad vehicles lately, the Hummer being one of them. The FJ isn't any slouch either, and they could always add a front locker.

You sure you want this?

Be careful of what you ask for.

Re: get off of your high horse

A lot of the OLD days weren't as GOOD as what we choose to remember...
Most cars from back then were junk by the time they hit 100K, if they ever did.
My wife & son have spent the past month driving all over the US in our FJC, there is no way that they could have put the 9000+ miles on an FJ60 back in "the good ol days" without some breakdown or the other. I still vividly remember carrying a toolbox in the back of my 70's Pontiac SW on any trip beyond my county line... and it only had 125K on it.. Of course thats why i got it dirt cheap - immaculately maintained, no rust - but "high" mileage.
Before I bought the FJC i seriously looked at some FJ40's & 60's that were restored... Not a one of the ones i saw on ebay had an original motor or drivetrain in them..if they were so good, why? Now I would love to have one to just go trail riding or wheeling with! But why wheel with something that if it breaks will be harder to find parts for and possibly cost more (for real original stuff) when i can wheel with my FJC and fix it without any hesitation when it breaks?
My bottom line with any vehicle i've ever owned - if I dont like it - mod it till i do!!
