supercharger and a higher final ratio should give you that torque feel.
besides your wife's VW is probably 6-8 speed, it goes through 3 gears hitting 60mph so of course it will be very lively at low speed.
I timed it its actually pretty slow 0-60 more than 7 seconds where the FJ is below 7.
