Needs Better Quality Paint Job

This is the worst paint job I have ever had on a new car. It scratches and chips very easily. The border between the roof and body is cheap. This is not what I expect from Toyota.

Re: Needs Better Quality Paint Job

I just had mine re-painted (voodoo blue) and have already seen an "improvement". The reason it originally went in was because of some strong winds that we had last month that was kicking up gravel and sand. It completely destroyed the paint all the way around. We just had similar winds a couple of days ago, and I did not find a single chip in the new paint. The shop said that their paint is thicker than what the robots apply at the assembly plant, and that the water base primer is basically no good.

Prior to this, I had too many chips to count. I have never owned a vehicle where the paint chipped this bad. I also ran across another guy with a blue FJ, and the paint was just flaking off the edge of the rear door.

Does anyone know what the warranty is on paint? Toyota should stand behind their work. They should also be ashamed of themselves for such poor quality.

TexasCabledawg, how much did it cost to repaint the FJ?

3 year,36k miles. But It depends on where the chips are. If there all in the front, around the wheel wells or anywhere else your going to see normal paint damage, there just going to call it normal wear and tear. As for your scratches, if its trail damage then your not going to get anything covered.

I can't say exactly how much it cost just to re-paint it because the windshield, rear window, and all the driver side glass was replaced (as well as the rear tire cover). With all of that it was at around $6000. My insurance paid for it, and I don't know if the paint shop's pricing was a little more liberal because of that. I would suspect an individual may be able to get a decent paint job cheaper than that.

I previously found chips on every face of my FJ, even behind the spare tire. It was so irritating to take a trip and then spend another day touching up the paint. My 2004 Grand Cherokee doesn't have near the chips that the FJ did, and it has a lot more places, and has a lot more miles on it. As noted above, trying to get Toyota to do anything about it is a waste of time. I managed to get a free bottle of touch up paint.

I'm just hopeing the brick doesn't fade like Toyotas red has always done. When my Dad traded in his 91 pick up it had faded from red to pink. It had been pink since it was about 5 yrs old.

Re: Needs Better Quality Paint Job

Ok, I have read many threads about the poor paint quality. I also have experienced a couple chips, not as bad as my old Acura, but some. Because of this I decided to mix up and spray some of the FJ colors. I pulled the color codes from mine and a couple of my friends. The colors were Sun Fusion, Voodoo, Black. I used 3 lines; PPG Deltron (high end), Omni (ppg low end), and some Sikkens. So nine different variants. What I disertained is this: with all 9 variants, prior to reducing, the viscosity is very thin. The raw paint is very transparent, almost like a candy. For the yellow I used a beige primer and for the blue I used a grey primer. With both of the colors I shot one medium light tack coat followed by three medium wet coats. After clear coat I compared to the trucks. They were about two shades off. Now with the black I shot two different panels. I used a black primer to start on both On the first I shot 1 medium tack coat followed by 3 medium wet coats then clear. The second panel I shot 1 medium tack coat and five medium wet coats. The 3 coat matched almost perfect. The five coat had to much metallic and looked like a bass boat. So I apparently needed to apply more paint to the flat colors to get them to match. This is what I have disertained from my experiment, and this is only my opinion, the paint colors we all love can probably only be produced with a lower solids level. Because of this the paint is more vunerable to chips. Now with that being said I am only talking about the base color not the clear. Now maybe because of the VOC standards they could not use a high solids clear, that I do not know. What I do know is that most of the chips I hear about dont go to bare metal. This would tell me that the problem lies in the step between primer and color. I dont suspect Toyota did, but maybe they did not shoot a sealer or maybe the sealer had to much open time before color. Basically we all have less than desirable viscosity color coats. My advice 3M clear stone guard, and lots of wax!!

Re: Needs Better Quality Paint Job

Thanks for the very detailed analysis! That would make sense. My FJ got hit by an egg and a 1" diameter section of paint (Voodoo) just chipped right off, leaving the white primer exposed.
