Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

I have these in my buildup thread in my sig, but thought it would be a good idea to list it seperatly too.

For under $30 which includes one box of Yakima 23H Horizonal Mighty Mounts and the hardware, I was able to make a mount for both the shovel and axe.

All you have to do is put the mounts up on your racks slats, drill two holes each in your shovel and axe, and you are done.

I had some left over Yakima plastic wingnuts from some old bike racks of theirs, but you can use any 5/16th wingnut.

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

Any reason we couldn't use this for the HI-Lift?

Good solution!

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

The Hi-Lift ideally should have bigger diameter bolts like on my Slee mounts.
Used with Yakima 10V Vertical Mighty Mounts.

I have pics on my website in the 4Runner mods section using the Slee mounts with the Hi-Lift.

However I will not be mounting it up there, to hard for me to lift it up.
I have been in contact with Man-A-Fre who sells the Kaymar Hi-Lift brackets to see if they will make one for the FJ.

Using the Slee mounts on the 4Runner was easy, the roof was lower than the FJ.

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

I also put an email into Yakima yesternight to see if they have any Snap Arounds like that go on their crossbars that are bigger diameter sized at 1.75" like the sides of our racks.

If so...you could mount the Hi-Lift to the sides like the Demello mounts for cheap.
Even I can lift the Hi-Lift to the side of the rack, but on top it is just to hard, even on my 4' ladder I use to wash the rig with.

I am not giving up on Kaymar either to make one for the spare tire.

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

This is a lil off topic but I wonder if it's a good idea to have holes in the handle of the axe especially near the neck. Seems like it would compromise the structural integrity.

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

Not one bit.
It is a solid fiberglass, I know many who have ran the same setup for years with no problems.

I got a reply from Yakima, and as before when I asked about the 23H mounts several weeks back, they are clueless there, and do not know to much about their own stuff.

I had asked if they had some bigger 1.75" diameter mounts that might work.
Quote:
Unfortunately, we do not. Our Snaparounds are only made to fit our round bar or Thule's square bar and the Mighty Mounts are specifically made for each factory rack. I do not have a reverse way of fitting Mighty Mounts. I apologize for any inconveniences.
So it looks like I will have to pony up the $90 for Demello's mounts, or wait and see if one of Kaymars spare tire mounts will work from Man-A-Fre.

Re: Shovel & axe mounts on the cheap for the stock rack

Any update from Kaymar/Man-A-Fre on the Hi-Lift jack fit-up? I have the TRD wheels so may still be different. Hmm...

No, not yet.
I am not so sure now if I want the extra weight of the jack on the rear tire, so I ordered these yesterday.
Hi-Lift Roll Bar Mounts 1.75

Similar to the Demello mounts.
