Tin Can’s Do It Your Self: OEM Coat Hanger/ D-Ring Mounts

Hello and welcome to yet another do it yourself installment for the FJ Cruiser. Today we will be making OEM Coat Hanger D-Ring mounts. Yes, this has been done, but this is yet another way to do it…cheap!

List of tools/miscellaneous items:

• D-rings from a Jeep Grand Cherokee (2) ($2.00)
• Bolt cover caps (2) ($3.00)
• 10mm deep socket and driver (1/4 preferred)
• Double Sided File or bench grinder
• Razor knife

This DIY is very wordy on purpose, so that there is no question of what to do. I’m going to make the basic assumption that one knows how to use power tools. This DIY is written making only one side, the sides are the same just repeat the steps to make another. Note: These tools can also be used to do a jail break…lol!

Step 1: Removal of the Coat Hanger Bolt Cover
Using your hands locate the lower coat hanger cover, with a light pull the cover will unclip and then you can see the bolt. With a harder pull the cover will come off completely. Remove the cover completely. (Picture1 and 2) Move to step 2.

Step 2: Removal of the Coat Hanger Bolt
Using the 10mm deep socket and driver remove the 10mm bolt from the coat hanger that is visible. Leave the coat hanger bracket mounted to the ceiling panel. The bracket will not be removed. (Picture3 and 4) Move to step 3.

Step 3: Modification of Coat Hanger Bolt
Locate the 10mm coat hanger bolt you just remove from the bracket. Test fit the 10mm bolt for proper seating on the D-ring hanger. Note the overlapping washer. Using a file/bench grinder remove the excess washer that is overlapping the D-ring hanger. Test fit once again, the washer should sit flat against the D-ring hanger.(Picture 5 and 6) Move to step 4.

Step 4: Install D-Ring Mount/Coat Hanger Bolt
Locate D-ring mount and 10mm coat hanger bolt. Reinstall the coat hanger bolt with the D-ring mount using the 10mm deep socket and driver. NOTE your washer position; the washer should sit flat on the D-ring hanger. Torque coat hanger bolt to proper spec. Move to step 5.

Step 5: Modification of Bolt Cover Cap
Locate the bolt cover cap. Using the razor knife trim a groove in the side of the bolt cap cover (BE CAREFUL). By trimming the bolt cap cover this allows the cover to sit flush against the D-ring hanger. (Picture 7) Move to step 6.

Step 6: Installation of Bolt Cover Cap
Locate modified bolt cap cover. To install line up the trimmed section with the D-ring hanger, then push bolt cap cover on to the coat hanger bolt. Next, check the bolt cap cover for flushness. (Picture 8) Move to step 7.

Step 7: Enjoy
Hang stuff on the D-ring!! Have fun!!

Using the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee cargo net, one can follow the DIY and install the extra D-ring mounts where the SRS airbag logo is on the roof. This allows for the Jeep net to hang much like a hammock, perfect for stowing extra gear
