OEM Rack - Roof Drilled?

I wanted to know how the OEM FJC rack was attached to the roof so I went to the Toy lot and looked. I couldn't tell if the allen screws were going into the roof or if they were just going into a clip that was in the roof slots/gutters. The reason i originally wanted to know is that if the FJ comes with the OEM rack and later I want to switch to a Gobi, are there going to be extra holes in the roof to deal with? What you think?

Much Thanks

Re: OEM Rack - Roof Drilled?

Holes are pre-drilled for the mounting brackets for both the Gobi type and the factory racks. No extra holes are necessary.

Re: OEM Rack - Roof Drilled?

So if you remove the Toyota rack and install a Gobi you'll end up using the holes that the original rack used? Are there predrilled holes available on the roof that the OEM didn't use but the Gobi will?

Thanks

Re: OEM Rack - Roof Drilled?

I think you want to know if the roof rack mounting holes are holes in the roof or the threaded type nuts welded onto the roof?

I cannot 100% guarentee this is correct, but as some people have had wet roof liners from gaskets being missing, I would say that there are holes.

To answer the other question, the hole pattern for the GOBI is the same as the Std roof rack.

"So if you remove the Toyota rack and install a Gobi you'll end up using the holes that the original rack used?" YES

Are there predrilled holes available on the roof that the OEM didn't use but the Gobi will? NO

There are 6 mounting locations thats 2 holes each at total of 12 bolts for both the OEM rack or the Gobi rack. It is advised that when taking out the OEM bolts from the OEM rack that you work the bolts out together at each mounting point. There is thread lock on the OEM bolts and if you are to completely extract one bolt out before loosening the second bolt next to it, it may spin the floater bracket that its bolted into. If that happens once the second bolt is pulled out completely the bracket will drop onto the headliner.... and then the fun will begin cause the only way to reposition the floating bracket is removing the headliner

FJC with OEM rack uses a longer T40 torques head bolt w/ thread lock

FJC without OEM rack uses a shorter 10mm head size bolt w/ NO thread lock (The bolts are there just to hold up the floater bracket and keep water out)

Re: OEM Rack - Roof Drilled?

With or without the rack the FJ comes ready to install the Toy rack and is universal for others. If you do not get the rack when you buy the FJ the holes will have plastic covers over them.
