Interior / Exterior Visual TechThis section contains discussion related to visual modifications of the Toyota FJ Cruiser. Some items might include dash kits, roof rack modifications and other visual modifications.
Line-X is forever. It can never be removed. With piece parts, no big deal given they can be replaced to retrun to stock.
I have a 1973 Ford Bronco with 28,000 original miles. I looked everywhere for 6-7 years to find one that was not molested. 95+% of the examples were either heavily modified or abused beyond recognition.
I am not saying the FJ will become a classic collectors 20+ years from now ... or that everyone has that interest ... but the numbers on the FJ are very limited in the scheme of automotive production. When people in the 60's lag bolted an 8-Track player to the lower dash on a Shelby Mustang they were just enjoying their ride. Yes, hindsight is 20/20.
So my approach to modification is that if it can be "undone" then I do whatever makes sense at the time, but if it cannot (like using Line-X, specifically on metal panels) I will not modify. Or I will buy a second "play" vehicle for that purpose.
I think the FJ is a keeper. Just think if Toyota had discontinued production in the 2009 timeframe as was feared? Then the few existing would be priceless, and not necessarily in terms of dollars.
This is something to consider, however I do not see many modern cars becoming "Classic". Anyone who would want an FJ, I would assume would want a well equipped offroad vehicle. That being said, I also do not believe in preserving things and not having fun with it. If that were true, I would not be spending all this money on the thing in the first place!

What if just the inside of the bushwackers were line-x'ed... It would maintain regular look but be reinforced yet from the inside...
I was quoted $150 for the front and rear bumpers and the grill...they just picked it up though and I am just doing the roof today, can't decide if I want the others linex or painted...I'm thinking painted matte black.

I had mine painted matte black and I love the look. Only thing is, whenever you get chips in the paint, the underneath plastic color shows. I believe this wouldn't be the case, or at least not nearly as bad, if youwent with line-x.

Unless the formula has changed, Line X and Rhino Liner will eventually fade over a few years. I've had every truck I've owned sprayed in the bed and they all faded and ended up looking like ****, but the stuff did the job as intended. For fender flares and other removable cheap replacement parts, sure, but I'd never apply it to body panels and roofs. Looks cool at first but then later...
Then you have the possibility of some schmuck running into you. Whole fender replacement plus cost of respray, and you'll see the difference between the door and the fender. I seriously doubt they can blend that stuff in, could be completely wrong. Perhaps they've made good strides in the formula.
I agree with ASE but not so much in the sense that the FJ will become a classic because they won't be made anymore, but simply for the resale value. I sort of went off tangent here, but I see a few people with the desire to spray the whole damned thing, which doesn't make sense to me, but hey, it's their rig. I've been thinking of getting my sliders sprayed myself.
I say go for it on the parts you've mentioned. They'll look even beefier.

Re: To Line X or not to Line X
I just saw some videos on youtube of something called plasti dip, ive now gotten addicted to watching them for some reason
it looks like it can be removed if you dont like the results or if it wears over time might be something like 20 bucks to redo
