Roof Rack - Remove top bar

Saw a picture of an FJ with the top part of the roof rack removed. I need to do that to mine. Have a few parking garages I use on occasion that are pretty low. Still want the utility of the roof rack though. My roof rack was installed at the dealer after I purchased it so I have the white covers (whether they can be reused is an issue though). Has anyone already done this and have any pointers? (I searched the forum to no avail).

FYI, I asked the dealer if they could just install the lower portion, but it comes as a complete unit so they would have had to disassemble it to do that.

Does anyone know if the new ARB roof rack sits higher or lower than the factory rack?
