Gobi Stealth installed over a Webasto Panoramic Sunroof (photos)

About a month ago I ordered a custom Gobi Stealth rack built to go over (or should I say around) my Webasto Panoramic sunroof. I sent some dimensions to a nice fellow by the name of Paul at Gobi and he called me with a few follow up questions (mainly to find out if I wanted to attach an aftermarket bike, boat, or ski rack to the Gobi rack). I ordered the rack, ladder, Delta lights, and some cool retractable straps that mount to the rack. Two days ago the package arrived and it was well packed as you can see in the photo.

The rack install would have been easy but Toyota stripped out one of my FJ's torex screw heads so I was unable to remove the bolt and had to take the FJ to a body shop where they did a little surgery. Lesson here...if you have a factory roof rack already installed then make sure you can loosen all bolts before removing any one bolt all the way.

As you can see from the photos, the sunroof area has no bars or mesh crossing over it. I ordered my rack that way because I only plan to haul camping gear on it. I have two retractable straps that are mounted on the driver's side of the rack (hard to see from these photos) and the ladder makes access easy (plus my wife MADE me order the ladder because she said it looks cool).

The other nice thing about this rack is it comes forward on the FJ further than the factory rack. This is important with the sunroof installed because it allows you to add lights and the wind guard without having the stuff cross over the sunroof. The profile of this rack is shorter than the factory rack so you don't see nearly as much of it when looking out the sunroof from the front seats either.

I took my FJ out on the interstate and hit 80MPH. Wind noise vs factory rack was about the same, maybe slightly less with the lower profile and reduction in cross structures. The Gobi wind guard blocked a lot of the turbulence I use to experience at high speeds with the sunroof open.

Overall I would say I'm a satisfied Gobi customer.

Nice job. The Gobi rack looks great with the sunroof. Nice to know that Gobi does customizing. I am about order a Gobi Ranger for my FJ. I know you said you had a problem with a hex screw. Did you have any problems with support brackets falling into the roof liner after you removed the factory screws?

Thanks, Frogman from somewhere in Iraq out.

Yes but only with one. The support brackets have a plastic clip that keeps them in place but when the body shop cut the head off the stripped bolt they broke the clip. Fortunately the problem occurred over the front passenger site, we pulled the weather strip from the top of the door, and I was able to stick my hand between the liner and the roof and support it while I threaded in the new bolts.

Re: Gobi Stealth installed over a Webasto Panoramic Sunroof (photos)

Thanks y'all. I tried to take some photos of the inside looking out today but it was too sunny and most of the photos were useless. I will try again tomorrow or Monday.

I did manage to snap this one shot looking from the drivers seat (second photo) and I have an older factory rack photo from about the same perspective (first photo). The angle is not quite the same but you can get a better sense of just how much the Gobi's lower profile opens up the sides of the sunroof.

I took my wife out of town today for a 3 hour ride hitting speeds up to 90MPH. It was her first time to ride in the FJ since I installed the Gobi rack and she stated without me asking that she thought this new setup was more quiet. With the sunroof open at speeds over 70MPH expect it to be loud but I noticed a definite reduction of wind turbulence entering the cabin from the sunroof so I still have nothing but positive things to report at this time.

I may just be in a drinking mood...but I'm visualizing a keg strapped to that bad boy with the tap through the sunroof....

Cause you know...If you drink don't park. Accidents causes people.
