About a month ago I ordered a custom Gobi Stealth rack built to go over (or should I say around) my Webasto Panoramic sunroof. I sent some dimensions to a nice fellow by the name of Paul at Gobi and he called me with a few follow up questions (mainly to find out if I wanted to attach an aftermarket bike, boat, or ski rack to the Gobi rack). I ordered the rack, ladder, Delta lights, and some cool retractable straps that mount to the rack. Two days ago the package arrived and it was well packed as you can see in the photo.
The rack install would have been easy but Toyota stripped out one of my FJ's torex screw heads so I was unable to remove the bolt and had to take the FJ to a body shop where they did a little surgery. Lesson here...if you have a factory roof rack already installed then make sure you can loosen all bolts before removing any one bolt all the way.
As you can see from the photos, the sunroof area has no bars or mesh crossing over it. I ordered my rack that way because I only plan to haul camping gear on it. I have two retractable straps that are mounted on the driver's side of the rack (hard to see from these photos) and the ladder makes access easy (plus my wife MADE me order the ladder because she said it looks cool).
The other nice thing about this rack is it comes forward on the FJ further than the factory rack. This is important with the sunroof installed because it allows you to add lights and the wind guard without having the stuff cross over the sunroof. The profile of this rack is shorter than the factory rack so you don't see nearly as much of it when looking out the sunroof from the front seats either.
I took my FJ out on the interstate and hit 80MPH. Wind noise vs factory rack was about the same, maybe slightly less with the lower profile and reduction in cross structures. The Gobi wind guard blocked a lot of the turbulence I use to experience at high speeds with the sunroof open.
Overall I would say I'm a satisfied Gobi customer.
