Re: Complete Roof Rack Comparison

Whats the final height with the Gobi Ranger on stock FJ. ((81" missed it in the begining)) I want a rack to mount two fishing kayaks atop my FJ, but I have a garage clearance of 6'10 (82 in.) I would also like to have front and rear lights. any suggestions. I am not really into the stealth Gobi. thinking the ranger might be the choice.

BTW, Awesome post and it lead me to this forum I am now a member of.

Re: Complete Roof Rack Comparison

So... is anybody making a short roof rack that isn't ridiculously overpriced? I don't plan on using it much, but I'd like the option of a short rack that I can use and still get into my garage. Even a set of bars like on an XTerra or a 4Runner would be good. Does anybody make something like that?

I hear ya on that one MM! I added the stock rack and didnt pay enough attention I guess. I went back to my dealer and b!tched big time about how useless the stock rack was. I congratulated them on the first non adjustable, adjustable rack I had ever seen.

Long story short - To make me happy they ordered two more FJ cross members and a cross member for a LC. The LC cross member is a bit too long so I will have to saw some off, drill new holes and then tap the holes. I just got the cross members yesterday but I'll post pics and more info on how the install goes.
Well no reason to post pics. Just picture a stack cross member at the front of the rack! The LC cross member was about 4 inches too long, so I hack saw'd it off. I then put the stock end cap on and used a punch to mark where the new screws would go. The stock bolts are Metric #5 with a .8 thread. The aluminum is so soft that you can easily tap the new holes with cheap taps.

Im happy with the outcome and it will suffice until I am about to save up the scratch needed to get the Gobi Stealth.

Re: Complete Roof Rack Comparison

Garvin has also updated their product line with this. Airdam not included.

$681

Hopefully someone makes a similar item and cheaper. I can't have it extend all the way to the front because of my lightbar which I want to keep. Possibly could reweld some products that already exist.

The FJ Bajarack is complete and here are some pictures of the rack with accessories. More information can be found at the following Forum link:
Roof Rack Input
This rack is under $500 and it will be available May 26th.
I like that rack I have to admit, but's not under $500. It starts at $600 and with competition from Yakima that's got to be a hard sell.

That and those lights look they are just SCREAMING for a tree branch....

It doesn't look like the jack, tire, or shovel mounts are lockable either.

So close, but yet so far.

Re: Complete Roof Rack Comparison

I've had a lot of luck with the WAAG XS basket insert, fits into the stock rails w/slats removed. Sits a bit higher and sits slightly ahead of stock rails up front. Integrated light tabs, 4 in front, 2 in rear. Simple to install, noisy, needs a dam. ~$500. Worth considering when evaluating racks. See my photos for pix of WAAG. Here is their website:

Re: Complete Roof Rack Comparison

The jack and tool mounts are drilled for locks & we are currently getting a light hoop set up for the lights and you can also mount the lights on the bottom rail of the rack for a lower profile. Cris

i was also considering the bajarack until the price increase. it was initially marketed as an affordable alternative to more costly racks but when you price it with the recent price increase, shipping, and tax it comes out to close to $800. for $800 i am now considering the garvin wilderness expedition rack or the arb full rack with fit kit.
the advantage i see with the garvin and arb racks is a vast dealer network that allows me to buy locally to avoid shipping costs and if for any reason i need to return it, i dont have to worry about shipping it back.
