Exclamation Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

I have some anodized aluminum pieces that I would like to have powdercoated a different color or if not that, re-anodized a different color.

Roof rack mount pieces (maroon), wheel rings (blue) ... both to black ... is that possible?

Thanks in advance.

NC: I've been in contact with Mark Kier at Exclusive Power Coating in Valencia. They're the ones who gave Ginzero's stock wheels a nice, textured black powder coating Black powder coated alloys. Anyway, I know they do different colors and give discounts to this forum's members. Mark has also been very helpful and accommodating...I think you'll get good/honest advice from them regarding your needs. Their website shows a bit of what they can do. I've sent my stock FJC wheels off to them to be powder coated, too. Just a suggestion.

Contact info for them is:

There are a bunch of anodizers and powdercoaters in the Portland area. Get out your phonebook. I know for sure you can get aluminum anodized in a bunch of different colors and powdercoating should work also. If I remember correctly, they acid bath the aluminum to strip the color. See if any will throw your stuff in with a batch they are running fom someone else, it may save you some cash.

I belive your question was, can you powder coat anodized alunimum parts - yes.

Obviously you would not be able to anodize powder coated parts without blasting them first.

Re: Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

Thanks guys - I want my faux locks black. You know, it has taken a long time, but I am really not liking chrome as much as I used to!! Hanging out with you hics has ruined me for bling. I can't go to a 4x4 meet all blinged out. LOL

I really like the all-black wheel/tire look now and I used to hate that (although my H1 looked badass all blacked out). At some point I might even go with teflon mojaves or chambers.

Re: Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

Apparently, a caustic solution such as Lye and water in a plastic container will do the trick. It should remove the anodizing and then you can prep the surface just as you would normally for powdercoating. Easy-off oven cleaner is a rumor as well but I have my doubts. Here is a link to a site I came across with some good information on d.i.y. anodizing and removal.

Re: Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

Well, I just don't know if re-anodizing would work yet - maybe. I guess that is more durable than powercoating. With a Mojave wheel in 17" size you only have chrome, blue and red to choose from - the blue is not 'voodoo blue' in is too bright like neon blue lol, and the chrome, is well, chrome. I think either black or a matching blue. A gay friend of mine said the neon blue was 'the bomb' or something like that ... so .. I am worried ... chrome ones on there now. Center caps stink, may just remove them and listen to 'where are the center things' from passers by all day.

After looking at this pic, I think black, I don't think 'matching blue' will work.

Re: Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

No problem powdercoating anodized stuff. Check in your area, there should be plenty of shops doing this. I had my Jeep rims and rings (red anodized) powdercoated and no ill effects.

PS: Noisycow - What size rims and tires are you running?

Re: Powercoating Anodized Aluminum Pieces - is it possible?

NC call Tony at LCNW they know some great powder and anodizing people. Their anodizing shop does work for Gerber and for manufacturer of rifle scopes.

Anodizing is a process of electrolytically creating a coating of aluminum oxide on the aluminum, which is then dyed with strong dyes. The dye is then sealed in with steam and nickel hydrate, closing the pores in the oxide to prevent the dye from leaching out. To allow the surface to be re-dyed, the exsting aluminum oxide might need to be removed, the pieces re-anodized, re-dyed and re-sealed.

Powdercoating is a process of electrostatically coating an object with thermoset, thermoplastic or epoxy powder, which is then heated and fused into a solid coating.

The following site says the oxide has to come off for powdercoating.

What Is Powder Coating?
