OEM vs GOBI ROOF RACKS

anyone have comments on the quality fit and finish of each?

I know the Gobi covers the entire roof, and the OEM only half the roof, but the OEM also costs half as much. Is the Gobi worth the $1500?

Where can I find Gobi for "cheap"?

The Gobi is so much easier to carry cargo but it has the price to match.

If your are buying a used OEM rack that looks brand spanking new you can get it for like 300 bucks I think, that is 1/4 to 1/5 the price depending on if you need to pay shipping to get it to you.

Total agree you can store more on the Gobi....all depends on looks and how much you really think you are going to use it. Good luck in your search.

Re: OEM vs GOBI ROOF RACKS

I have the OEM rack and never have to ever worry about rust. I have seen plenty of roof racks in the past. And if they are not made from aluminium they will rust.

I will stay with the OEM. Very well made and I don't like the "tool shed" look on top of my FJ.

I like the lower profile look of the GOBI, maybe you could even sleep on it. You always pay more for OME just to the shipping from the other side of the world.

You can. I have an inflatable Aero twin and it fits like it was made for the gobi. Not to mention you can blow it up with the outlet in the trunk. Just waiting for the weather to warm up. The crossmember in the middle doesnt stick out too far either.

Re: OEM vs GOBI ROOF RACKS

You can get the OEM Rack for $300? If so where?

Is that $649 price shown on the Toyota eBrochure the installed-price?

For 300 beans, I might just SETTLE for the OEM one. But, I'm fairly sure I'd get way more usage out of the Gobi. $1500, damn thats a lot of money.

If you noticed I said "used"....and I used the words "I think" as I have seen quite a few people selling thier stock ones in the part for sale area of this site. Here are a few, just do a search and I'm sure you will see more.

I have actually seen new ones for $460, don't recall where though and I'm sure you put $50-100 shipping on it...

$1500 is a lot of money...that's almost new rims and tires..

Do some more searching...you'll find something...but your not going to get a Gobi any cheaper if you ask me...

Re: OEM vs GOBI ROOF RACKS

I guess the other consideration is total height. With the Gobi Stealth you save about 3-4 inches vs the OEM. You may be limited in entering some parking structures with the Toyo one.

T

ps I hit the height beam at the Hollywood Sheraton underground parking and set off the alarm, but did not have problems throughout the parking area.

Re: OEM vs GOBI ROOF RACKS

FJ4GD, sorry about that, I miss read.

I presume both the Gobi and OEM are straight bolt on? There's no drilling, etc, right?

Appreciate the links.
