Mesh bottom or basket for OEM roof rack?

I've looked around on the forum and on the Yakima & Thule web sites for a mesh bottomed basket that fits inside the OEM roof rack. I expect I'd have to remove the cross slats. Anybody heard on anything that would work? It would be a lot cheaper than having to buy another roof rack that already has the mesh bottom like ARB.

Re: Mesh bottom or basket for OEM roof rack?

Not seen it but nice idea. I used to work at a place that made mesh and such, they could definitely do it.

Look around your home town for a wire company. They make all kinds of stuff in shops like that, and may be able to sell you a generic panel you can trim and rig up. They buy wire by the coil, straighten it, cut it, and weld it on Schlatter's or such other automated spot welders. A panel takes less than a minute to make on the machine.

Ever seen those Super save fences, or Rent a fence? You know by construction sites. I have made hundreds of those back in the day. One of those panels would likely work, without the frame welded to it.

Good luck!

I attached my yakima box this way:

Yakimabox

This might also work for the baskets.

This is a great idea!

I, too, would very much be interested in a mesh bottom solution for the OEM rack. It would work a lot better than the stocker with just three cross bars IMO. My problem is that I like the overall look of the OEM roof rack and don't feel justified in spending the $$ on a completely different rack just to gain the mesh bottom. And unfortunately, I don't have the skills or tools required to fabricate something myself.

Are any of the forum vendors working on something like this? Or perhaps some of the fabricators in the forum? Just curious. I believe if someone could fab a mesh bottom that is powder coated and bolts right onto the stock rack, they'd have a really popular seller on their hands.

Anyone have any more insight into a product like this?

Good idea. I'll measure the height of the basket Yakima sells. The crossbars sit lower than the sides of the OEM rack so that's a good start.

I used to make mesh so I could look into it. However, shipping an item like this will be a major PITA. Maybe a two part kit?

Two-part might work depending on the strength of where they join. How do you think the mesh would attach to the OEM rails?

Re: Mesh bottom or basket for OEM roof rack?

you can have them custom made by someone who works with vinyl or something similar. i want to get a full on soft bag for the top that is waterproof and zips up.

I would go with clamps like on some of these roof rack mounts. I can supply those inexpensively as well. I need someone with an OEM rack now so I can get measurements and a quote.

Vinyl? I was thinking powdercoated steel.
