Safety flag mount: "Front-most portion of vehicle"

In preparation for a trip to the "Silver Lake Sand Dunes" along the western side of Michigan I am having no luck locating an "acceptable" solution for the mounting of a safety flag on the front end of my vehicle.

Our Department of Natural Resources has the following requirement "a warning flag mounted and extending over the front-most portion of the vehicle". Sounds simple enough but I can't seem to locate a "clean" solution.

I have tried forum searches under: SAFETY, FLAG & MOUNT and have seen really nice "Brandi" mounts and "roof rack" mounts but I do not believe that these will satisfy the requirements.

Thanks in advance to anyone with a suggestion!

Section of the regulation from the DNR site regarding compliance:

5.9 Off-road vehicles, Silver Lake State Park Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Area, conditions for use, prohibited conduct.

7) Operate a vehicle requiring seat belts without a warning flag mounted and extending over the front-most portion of the vehicle. Vehicles not requiring seat belts shall mount the warning flag on the rear of the vehicle. Vehicle operators shall comply with all of the following requirements:
(a) The warning flag shall be mounted on a staff that is securely bolted or welded to the vehicle. The warning flag shall maintain a minimum 10-foot height at standstill and a minimum 8-foot height under motion.
(b) The warning flag shall be mounted on the top-most end of the staff. The flag shall be rectangular, international orange in color, solid material, with a minimum length on the supporting side of five inches and a minimum length on the base side of 10 inches.

I've never heard of a mandatory flag in the FRONT. That will be a tough one with the stock bumper.

put a peice of wood behind your grill mesh, then get some of that metal strapping that comes in a roll, loop it around the pole and wood screw it into the wood. should hold up good if you use a light flexible pole. What a bs rule, lol. sounds like something a drunk legislator made up.

Re: Safety flag mount: "Front-most portion of vehicle"

My wife surprised me with a weekend at silver lakes, we rented quads and had an absolute blast. I can assure you all that the flag rule is enforced. When entering the dunes your flag has to touch a bar they have over the entrance. Also I can understand the flag in front rule, what's the first part of your vehicle to crest the dune? As for vehicles w/out seat belts they are generally short enough to crest the dunes all at once (quads and dirtbikes). There are all kinds of vehicles out there ripping up the dunes, long sand rails, suburbans and even quad cab diesels. The front of those vehicles definately gets to the top of the dunes before the drivers eyes do. Keep your eyes peeled for those orange flags coming, it just may be a Dodge Dulie cresting the dune. If it has tires that can be aired down you run a good chance of seeing it out on the dunes. Have fun, I sure did.

Please don't buy Firestone Destination M/T tires. They will fall apart!

Ahh, yes I can understand the reasoning now.
One thing though, you spelled Lebowski wrong in your signature.

Re: Safety flag mount: "Front-most portion of vehicle"

I have never heard of a flag either having to me mounted up front.

I am using a custom mount on top of the stock FJ rack made by a forum vendor here.

Re: Safety flag mount: "Front-most portion of vehicle"

I got the two piece flag and mounted it underneath with a small pice of steel plate. I got both pieces at the same store I purchased the sticker.

The flag the mount and the sticker cost around $40. There is a bar across the entrance where the flag much touch.

I just unbolted the bumper bolt and bolted it in there. The plate was pre drilled for the flag.

I got it all from here.
